About The Position

Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The hospital is comprised of 545 beds and is a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station and a 911 Receiving Hospital. It is the premiere health care organization for key areas such as Surgery, Cardiology, Women's Health, Pediatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Renal and Mental Health Services. Purpose of Position: Under clinical supervision and in accordance with established guidelines and procedures, operates electroencephalograph equipment to measure impulse frequency and differences in electrical potential between various areas of the brain to obtain data for use on diagnosis of the nervous system. Acts in compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals, health care setting, and other appropriate regulatory requirements and patient safety standards.

Requirements

  • Current certification as a Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R. EEG T.) issued by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET); or
  • Two (2) years of experience as an Electroencephalograph Technician in a hospital or health care setting; and a. Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology or Neurodiagnostic Technology; or b. Recognized training program Certificate of Completion from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET); or c. Graduate from Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Program; or
  • High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and five (5) years of experience as an Electroencephalograph Technician in a hospital or health care setting. Recognized training program Certificate of Completion from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) or Graduate from Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) ac credited program may be substituted for one (1) year of experience, as described in #1 of Assignment Level I above.
  • Holds or obtains a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) within sixty (60) calendar days of appointment to the title.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and positions patients for standard electroencephalograph (EEG) tests and performs continuous electroencephalogram (cEEG) and/or Evoked Potentials (EP) tests, as needed; performs portable EEG in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs)/Critical Care Units (CCUs), as necessary.
  • Attaches electrodes to patient's head, provides appropriate instructions and explanations on the recording procedure, and monitors patient through EEG recording; detaches electrodes after procedure.
  • Operates EEG equipment to obtain accurate tracing of impulses from various parts of the brain; identifies and eliminates tracing caused by outside interference.
  • Identifies tracing, prepares records, and enters results into an appropriate system.
  • Disinfects EEG equipment and electrodes and ensures working order.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains EEG equipment or arranges for support services and repairs, as necessary; maintains inventory of EEG equipment and supplies.
  • Schedules and registers patients for EEG appointments.
  • Performs other related duties, as directed.
