About The Position

The Electro-Optical Engineer I position at the Nevada National Security Site involves working within a multidisciplinary team to provide diagnostic fielding and development support in a national laboratory environment. The role focuses on the design, development, characterization, and fielding of diagnostic systems for high-stakes weapons physics experiments, particularly at the PULSE facility. The engineer will support various diagnostic detection and recording systems, emphasizing practical applications and theoretical knowledge in electro-optical and radiographic imaging systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering degrees, or a Calculus-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering.
• Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) for Architects, or a Professional Engineer license.
• Knowledge/experience with fiber optics and lasers of all types.
• Experience with setting up and operating research and development (R&D) instrumentation in a laboratory setting.
• Hands-on knowledge of electronic instrumentation including high-speed digitizers, digital oscilloscopes, digital delay/pulse generators, high voltage instrumentation, and other R&D laboratory instrumentation is highly desirable.
• Exposure to programming platforms, good technical writing and communication skills, and familiarity with PCs and PC application software, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Desire to learn and innovate.
• Ability to work in high stress, procedurally rigorous environments.
• Ability to work in hazardous environments that include high voltage systems, visible and ultraviolet lasers, and large scale pulsed power machines.

Responsibilities

• Use and apply established technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques associated with diagnostic and data collection systems.
• Operate diagnostic systems and collect data.
• Apply academic knowledge to the work environment and develop good work/team habits.
• Contribute to solutions of problems and issues with limited scope and basic complexity, supporting more senior engineers and scientists.
• Assist in compiling and summarizing scientific data, utilizing technology solutions for experimental and operational needs.
• Contribute to the preparation of project deliverables.
• Define specifications for procurements and initiate purchase requests.
• Select and implement computer applications for related field.
• Build direct relationships with laboratory partners and contribute to experimental operations using scientific methods.
• Support research and development, and technology maturation activities in laboratory testing environments.
• Perform other duties assigned by Management.
