Job Description: Electrician II Purpose: Under general supervision, this position leads and performs tasks in repair, installation, maintenance, and testing of electrical equipment and circuits.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic electricity.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of building codes applicable to level of construction.
  • Knowledge of equipment tools and materials used in electrical maintenance and construction.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools common to the electrical trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and schematics
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years experience in repair, testing, maintenance or installation or electrical systems or equipment.
  • One (1) additional year of relevant work experience may substitute for one (1) year of the required education, with a maximum substitution of four (4) years.
  • Appropriate licensing may be required.
  • This position requires a valid Texas driver’s license or the ability to acquire one by your hire date.
  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Nice To Haves

  • The purpose of this position is to repair or replace specialty lighting components located throughout The City of Austin on its bridges and urban trail systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and schematics.
  • Conduct inspections and ensure project completion for adherence to electrical plans.
  • Ability to research and implement specialty lighting replacement components.

Responsibilities

  • Pulls wire, conduit, cable, etc.
  • Connects power cables to equipment, including generators, alarm systems, lighting systems, etc.
  • Conducts on-the-job training.
  • Assigns duties and monitor task completion.
  • Uses various electrician hand tools, including snips, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, etc.
  • Operates soldering tools.
  • Reads profiles and blueprints.
  • Measures, cuts, and bends wire and conduit using rulers and hand tools.
  • Installs wire, conduit, coaxial cable, etc.
  • Installs conductors.
  • Splices electrical wiring, including stripping insulation, twisting wires together, soldering tape, appling terminal caps, etc.
  • Operates various power saws, such as radial arm, skill, etc.
  • Operates drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc.
  • Operates electronic testing equipment.
