About The Position

The Electrician I (non-certified), is responsible for assisting other Electricians, and/or the Electric Shop Supervisor with installations and repairs. The electrician I, will run conduit, pull wire, mount electrical boxes, and connect switches and receptacles as needed. Troubleshoot existing circuits for problems and repairs. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job. Essential Functions and Responsibilities 1. As Essential Personnel you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Including but not limited to shoveling, salting, etc. Maintenance Technicians are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as Winter Fest, orientations, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, and summer camps, amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. 2. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise. 3. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Electrical Tech III/ Lead and/or the Electric Shop Supervisor. 4. Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures of the Electrical field. 5. Knowledge of the tools of the electrical trade. 6. Install, maintain, and enhance electrical systems and components, including fuses, lights, and wiring. 7. Inspect, test, and diagnose issues with electrical systems and components. 8. Follows all relevant safety codes and guidelines while installing and servicing electrical equipment and performing the job duties and responsibilities of an Electrician I. 9. Must follow safety procedures and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) as required while performing the job duties and responsibilities of an Electrician Helper/ Apprentice. This includes but is not limited to, safety glasses, face shields, hard hats, safety shoes, insulating (rubber) gloves with leather protectors, insulating sleeves, harness, and flame-resistant (FR) clothing. Always adhere to job-specific safety protocols. 10. Might use a harness while on a ladder or lift to perform the job duties and responsibilities of an Electrician I. 11. Construct controllers and panels, using power drills, drill presses, taps, saws, and punches. 12. Secure brackets to bulkheads with screws and bolts and pull wires through conduit leading to connection boxes, switch panels, and other terminals. 13. Replace faulty circuit breakers, fuses, switches, electrical and electronic components, or wire. 14. Repairs motors, transformers, generators, and electronic controllers on machine tools and industrial robots. 15. Rewires commercial buildings as needing. 16. Bolt component parts together to form tower assemblies, using hand tools. 17. String transmission lines or cables through ducts or conduits, under the ground. 18. Ability to understand electrical problems and their potential solutions. 19. Runs conduit, pull and terminate wire. 20. Install fixture and device boxes. 21. Assist in the trim-out of electrical panels. 22. Cleans and maintains tools and performs routine maintenance on special equipment used in electrician’s work. 23. Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and materials. 24. Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment. 25. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc. 26. Correct Unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to Supervisor immediately. 27. Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. 28. Performs other duties as assigned. 29. Must provide own hand tools to perform and complete trade related tasks. 30. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks. 31. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 1+ years of related experience required, or approximately 1-3 years of related experience in the electrical trade with and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be able to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision
  • Must be able to work well with the public and co-worker’s ad present a positive attitude
  • Clean and professional appearance
  • Must be courteous, detailed oriented, self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills
  • Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties of the Electrical trade in typical Virginia climate
  • Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required
  • Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/evening hours
  • Must provide own hand tools to perform and complete trade related tasks

Nice To Haves

  • This position might require the use and operation of aerial lifts or be willing and able to obtain aerial lift certifications, operate, and work from various aerial lifts and heights

  • Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it
