The Electrician Assistant supports and assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the electrical equipment and fixtures of city buildings and facilities in compliance with federal, state, and city codes.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of electrical components and apparatus.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes and regulations.
  • Ability to read various complex schematic diagrams and blueprints, troubleshoot electrical systems, and develop resolutions.
  • Ability to use and instruct in various types of hand tools, power tools, precision testing and/or troubleshooting equipment.
  • Communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent work experience.
  • One (1) year of experience in the construction, installation, maintenance, or repair of electrical equipment.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Must have or be able to obtain State of Texas Electrical Apprentice License within three (3) months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assists and supports Electricians in the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits for the City and its departments and facilities.
  • Troubleshoots simple electrical and electronic apparatus, motors, controls, and equipment by using schematics to ensure electrical power compatibility and safety of components.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains various electrical equipment such as control circuits, lighting circuits, motors, switch gear for new, temporary and existing construction and ensures equipment conforms to electrical and safety codes.
  • Participates in the inspection and evaluations of electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair to ensure compliance with electrical codes; tests circuits and electric components to locate broken connections or defective current-control mechanisms.
  • Documents maintenance and repair activities to provide accurate records of work performed; participates in and attends various training opportunities to develop skills and expertise.
  • Performs preventive maintenance work on electrical equipment and fixtures to detect electrical hazards; connects, pulls, and lays wires according to diagrams to install and repair fixtures.
  • Reads blueprints or electrical diagrams to determine locations of equipment and conformance to building and safety codes.
  • Performs any and all other trades work as needed or assigned.
