About The Position

Maintains equipment assigned to the Equipment Department and may be called upon to perform other duties in cases of emergency and be assigned other tasks requiring equal or less skill. This is a journeyman position. After initial orientation and guidance, individuals are expected to fully meet the qualifications listed below, and will be fully responsible for the correct completion of the work assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and a background check.
  • The individual must be a high school graduate and have certification of completion of additional vocational/technical training as an HVAC Technician. Ten (10) years of continuous work experience as a HVAC Technician can substitute for the vocational training requirement.
  • The position requires four (4) years of experience as an HVAC Technician maintaining, repairing and overhauling rail transit vehicle HVAC systems. Experience in an industrial or commercial HVAC maintenance environment will be accepted as a substitute for rail transit experience.
  • The individual must possess a valid US Environmental Protection Agency Type II Certification as required by Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.
  • This position requires knowledge of the correct and safe use of the full complement of industrial hand and power tools, measuring devices, gauges, test instruments and material handling equipment needed for electrical and HVAC maintenance work. Material handling equipment can include bridge cranes and fork lift trucks. Use of power cleaning, abrasive cleaning and painting equipment is required. Use of heating equipment may be required to assemble and disassemble components. When required, individuals will be trained before using specialized equipment. The position requires the use of electrical diagnostic instruments and refrigerant handling, reclamation and diagnostic equipment.
  • The individual must be able to successfully pass an examination which tests comprehension of the theory of operation and maintenance of HVAC systems.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License in state of residence.
  • The individual must demonstrate the ability to organize, and analyze complex and diverse information and use same to resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • The individual must pursue training and development opportunities in order to continuously build knowledge and skills. Must be willing to share expertise with others.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance, diagnoses equipment malfunction and makes appropriate repairs and overhauls heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  • The individual is responsible for preventive maintenance and repair of the relay and microprocessor control systems, charging the refrigerant system, and maintenance and repair of drive motors, compressor and refrigerant containing components.
  • This individual will be assigned general transit car electrical maintenance and repair duties when required.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity and using all required personal protective equipment.
