About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Electrical Test Engineer to work on our SMC Engineering & Product Design team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Specific Manufacturing Capabilities (SMC) desert-site facility with every Friday off. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing testing procedures for printed circuit boards (PCBs) to ensure their functionality, reliability, and quality. This role involves creating test plans and fixtures, performing comprehensive testing, analyzing results, troubleshooting issues, and documenting findings. Additionally, the engineer will stay updated with industry trends and continuously improve testing processes while collaborating with design and manufacturing teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, manufacturing engineering, or directly related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution and at least 5 years of direct/relevant experience for Level 3.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, manufacturing engineering, or directly related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution and at least 9 years of direct/relevant experience for Level 4.
  • Proven experience in PCB testing, including familiarity with testing equipment and methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of PCB design, manufacturing processes, and electronic components.
  • Proficiency in using testing software and tools such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, or similar.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy 'Q' clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Responsibilities

  • Develop test plans, procedures, fixtures, and automated scripts for PCB testing, including hardware and software solutions.
  • Perform and verify functional, environmental, and reliability testing on PCBs using various testing equipment.
  • Analyze test data, troubleshoot PCB failures, and work with design and manufacturing teams to resolve issues and improve processes.
  • Document test procedures and results, prepare detailed reports, and maintain records of testing activities and equipment calibration.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, implement best practices, and provide feedback for product improvement.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other engineers, planners, operations personnel, and other stakeholders to ensure the proper execution of testing activities.
  • Provide first order data analysis and report test status to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Provide input on the functionality of test equipment and support procurement activities in acquiring equipment, spare parts, or other systems for plant modifications and/or research systems.
  • Evaluate and assess system/equipment performance and history to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Create design of experiments including data acquisition, data collection in laboratory, and appropriate data reduction as dictated by project needs.
  • Analyze, interpret, and evaluate experimental results.
  • Mentor junior engineers and other technical personnel in appropriate test procedures, maintenance, and laboratory activities.
  • May be responsible for all electrical engineering aspects of project work, including identifying the equipment, services, space, personnel, work controls, etc., required to execute given projects.
  • May direct others or work directly with equipment vendors to diagnose and repair malfunctions and/or design and specify new equipment to meet customer requirements.
