Overview: The Electrical Project Engineer uses engineering skills to define, develop, and execute the technical scope and corresponding deliverables necessary and sufficient to deliver project goals. The Electrical Project Engineer works with the Project Team and Stakeholders to ensure technical tasks are identified, assigned, prioritized, and completed, with technical accuracy and in accordance with the project charter. The Electrical Project Engineer works with Project Managers and reports to the Portfolio Manager. The Electrical Project Engineer supports the planning, design, execution, and turnover of Electrical capital projects within the plant focusing on manufacturing & electrical utility reliability, electrical process improvement & optimization, documenting equipment and component requirements and specifications, plant utility modernization, and supporting contract negotiations and field execution. This role provides technical support for power distribution, controls, instrumentation interfaces, motors, MCCs, lighting, electrical utilities, grounding, and other electrically related systems, as well as interfacing with rotating equipment, process equipment, mechanical systems having electrical components, and any other related installations. The Electrical Project Engineer ensures the work is practical, safe, maintainable, and aligned with plant standards and operational needs. The Electrical Project Engineer collaborates with cross-functional engineers who support projects as SMEs. The Electrical Project Engineer is accountable for cross-functional engineers’ project tasks getting completed on time, with accuracy and precision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or mechanical with strong electrical experience), or related field preferred.
  • 2 to 5 years of related engineering and project engineering experience.
  • Experience with electrical systems in industrial or process environments; Nitrogen-based fertilizer industry is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of power distribution, MCCs, utilities, motors, grounding, instrumentation and controls, pumps, compressors, electrical installation practices, and commissioning practices.
  • Working knowledge and application of governing regulations, codes, and standards relative to the electrical systems in the petrochemical industry.
  • Strong communication, organization, field coordination, and technical problem-solving skills, along with construction planning and field schedule development.
  • Demonstrated engineering skills valuating technical competencies of contractors, suppliers, and vendors, as they relate to proposal and quotation evaluation during vendor selection.
  • Willingness to work around dust, chemicals, high pressure, high temperature, loud noises, and running equipment.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (fire retardant uniform, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection).
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Become proficient in all areas of electrical equipment and project evaluation, including initiation and planning, development, scoping and deliverables, detail design including instrumentation and control, budget development, project estimating, the capital funding process, and project change management.
  • Develop and support electrical scopes of work, estimates, and project execution plans.
  • Coordinate with Operations and Maintenance to confirm maintainability and operability of electrical systems, as well as engineering, contractors, utility providers, and equipment suppliers/vendors.
  • Oversee/engineer assigned plant changes and perform project engineering responsibilities on in-house projects.
  • Advise on electrical equipment specifications, plant modifications, and repairs.
  • Apply appropriate engineering standards in compliance with Federal/State codes and industry practice.
  • Verify work meets design intent, electrical codes, safety & company standards, and plant requirements.
  • Review drawing packages, specifications, calculations, and vendor documents for electrical systems.
  • Participate in design, hazard, and constructability reviews, as well as pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Issue purchase requisitions and assist in the technical selection of equipment, contractors, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Technically review and recommend major equipment suppliers/ vendors.
  • Support procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and energization activities.
  • Monitor and advise on spare parts requirements and assist in planning plant turnaround activities.
  • Work with Project Managers on stakeholder engagement through technical progress reports on capital project planning, development, and execution.
  • Coordinate contractors and internal stakeholders during field execution.
  • Assist with field coordination, RFIs, punch lists, and construction issue resolution.
  • Assist with turnover documentation, asset handoff, and project closeout.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
  • Working with the Maintenance Electrical Engineer, E&I Group, and Operations, and while wearing appropriate PPE including a hard hat, steel-toed boots, and a fire-resistant uniform, monitor and inspect electrical equipment during outage opportunities and turnarounds, and initiate action for repair, replacement, and/or upgrade, as necessary.
  • Oversee owner/user program for the site.
  • Inspect/test and provide technical release to ship fabricated equipment at the vendor’s location to ensure compliance with specifications and schedule.
