About The Position

The Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Technician is distinguished from the Electrical and Instrument Technician in that the Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Technician will also provide a high level of technical support to the control system equipment, system software, and application software that controls the process. This position will work closely with other maintenance personnel and operations to identify and resolve problems within the specified limits.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of journey-level experience in programming of PLCs, electrical and/or electronic instrumentation maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to demonstrate adequate working knowledge of PLC troubleshooting and diagnostics.
  • Good working knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (Allen Bradley PLC5 and ControLogix) is a plus.
  • Firm foundation in industrial process knowledge, preferably in Pulp and Paper.
  • Experience with instrumentation and electrical systems associated with process control systems.
  • Excellent computer skills – particularly Microsoft including Outlook, Excel, Word, Project, Power point.
  • Understand P&ID drawings, loop sheets, and motor elementaries and can create these drawings as necessary.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for safe work practices ensuring accident-free work environment.
  • Devises, selects, sets up, and operates electronic instrumentation and related electromechanical or electrohydraulic apparatus used for operational testing of mechanical, structural, or electrical equipment.
  • Translates test data by performing the following duties. Plans layout, installs, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Must have a firm understanding of instrumentation (pneumatic 0-10V, 4-20mA).
  • Selects, installs, calibrates, and checks sensing, telemetering, and recording instrumentation and circuitry.
  • Sketches and builds or modifies fixtures, instruments and related apparatus.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of test apparatus and peripheral equipment.
  • Operates test apparatus during test cycle to produce, regulate, and record effects of actual or simulated conditions.
  • Analyzes and converts test data to usable form and prepares graphs and written reports.
  • Uses computerized equipment and software to perform testing functions and produce graphs.
  • Requires strong AC/DC drive, PLC and relay logic troubleshooting skills.
  • Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials.
  • Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints.
  • Installs, terminates, and tests all raceway, wiring, connections and equipment necessary for any industrial controls components.
  • Pulls wiring through conduit.
  • Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Repairs/replaces faulty equipment or systems.
  • Practices good housekeeping techniques ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Improves existing controls, streamline operator tasks, increases machine productivity and troubleshoots as needed for ongoing issues.
  • Utilizes DCS engineering stations to maintain and modify machine control logic, human machine interfaces, control hardware and machine communication networks.
  • Ensures all machine control system device programs and settings are backed up on a regular basis.
  • Maintains all electrical schematics to ensure changes are recorded.
  • Assists with developing data acquisition historian reports and trends.
  • Performs resource functions for E&I technicians, including scoping, engineering and ordering parts.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots all machine instrumentation and electrical systems up to 4200 VAC.
  • Configures, troubleshoots and repairs motor control centers, variable frequency drives and soft-starts up to 4160 Volt.
  • Installation, calibration and troubleshooting of pressure, level, flow, temperature, consistency, conductivity, turbidity and pH transmitters.
  • Tuning of process control loops and machine control systems.
  • Programming and troubleshooting of DCS, PLC and HMI interfaces.
  • Performs configuration and logic modifications to DCS and PLC control systems.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses configuration and implementation of integrated and stand-alone graphic human machine interfaces.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses specification of communication protocols.
  • Designs and implements process control strategies.
  • Develops, modifies, and enhances HMI.
  • Monitors control system performance, which includes loop analysis and tuning.
  • Implements new control system technology.
  • Supports process problem solving by identifying sources of process upsets and other anomalies.
  • Develops and maintains alarm systems.
  • Supports capital projects.
