About The Position

The employee will support the City of Rock Springs mission 'To provide all individuals, through the combined efforts of city government and the people it serves, an effective, efficient and productive form of government, while promoting an enhanced quality of life, open communications and economic growth'. The employee must also demonstrate the competencies for their position, and adhere to policies and procedures of their department and the City of Rock Springs. Under direction, to perform technical electrical and building inspection work in enforcing compliance with electrical and building codes, regulations and ordinances. Coordinate activities with other divisions, outside agencies, and the general public; and to provide highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Chief Building Inspector.

Requirements

  • Five years of increasingly responsible inspection experience.
  • A high school diploma required, along with the completion of a full electrical apprenticeship.
  • Possession of a valid Wyoming driver's license.
  • Possession of a Journeyman or Master Electrician License issued by the State of Wyoming (Master Preferred).
  • Possession of International Code Council Commercial Electrical Inspector.

Responsibilities

  • Exercises supervision over professional, technical and clerical staff as required by the Chief Building Inspector.
  • Review plans and applications for field inspection; inspect industrial, commercial and residential electrical installations and related buildings and equipment during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations including National Electric Code, Building Code, Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, City ordinances, and other City departments' requirements; check plans for special conditions or requirements an existing Building Code.
  • Receive complaints of electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical code and ordinance violations; investigate or forward complaint to appropriate personnel.
  • Identify code violations; obtain and prepare evidence; issue notices to comply on violations; follow-up on correction notices to ensure required corrections have been performed; maintain records of history of facts for possible legal actions.
  • Coordinate inspection activities with other City departments and divisions as required; ensure all departments' requirements are met before issuing certificate of occupancy.
  • Approve the issuance of building permits; compute permit fees; issue building permits.
  • Confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office; explain and interpret requirements and restrictions.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of electrical inspection.
  • Provide staff assistance to the Chief Building Inspector; prepare staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Prepare, update, and enforce the city fire codes, ordinances, and standards; develop and implement a comprehensive code enforcement program as it pertains to permitted work.
  • Enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact while exercising good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Maintain accurate and complete files, report, schedules, recommendations and other administrative records for all inspection activities and findings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
