The Electrical Inspector works under the supervision of the Chief Building Official. This position is responsible for establishing priorities and work schedules, inspecting and certifying wiring and cables for safety and compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC) standards, and inspecting principal electric service entrances. The inspector coordinates inspections with the electric company, Housing Inspector, and Fire Department, approves electrical service hookups, and performs miscellaneous inspections of sidewalks, streets, and safety measures at construction sites. The role also involves responding to citizen complaints, maintaining reports and records of inspections, and providing assistance in the absence of regular personnel. The inspector must stay updated on changes and developments affecting various codes and other operational developments.

  • Approves electrical service and authorizes power company to connect electrical power supply to any building or other service within the city.
  • Inspects and certifies building sites including proposed construction sites, footers, foundations, framing, roofing, insulation, and wiring for compliance with adopted codes.
  • Inspects switch and receptacle box placement for proper size and installation, and inspects wiring and cables for safety and compliance with NEC standards.
  • Coordinates inspections and activities with the electric company, Construction Inspector, Housing Inspector, and Fire Department.
  • Performs miscellaneous inspections including safety measures at razed building and construction sites.
  • Responds to citizen complaints involving construction and other issues.
  • Performs necessary paperwork to report and record inspections and answers inquiries concerning inspections and code requirements.
  • Reviews construction plans and electrical plans for code compliance.
  • Stays up to date on changes and new developments affecting various codes.
  • Serves as an expert witness in court.
  • Responds to emergency situations relating to building codes outside of normal business hours.
  • Extensive technical or specialized training such as that which would be acquired by an Associate's Degree or two years of technical or business school.
  • Current Master Electrician or Journeyman certification through the state of WV.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • ICC certification as a Residential Electrical Inspector within 6 months of date of hire.
  • ICC certification as a Commercial Inspector and Plans Examiner within 12 months of date of hire.
  • 4-6 years of experience in construction, electrical or related fields.
  • Supplemental courses in building trades and seminars or conferences concerning the National Electrical Code.
  • Master Electrician license.
  • ICC Electrical Inspector certification.
  • Current ICC IRC/IBC certification.
  • Ten (10) years of experience as an Electrical Contractor or Inspector.
  • Permanent full-time employment status.
  • Compensation starting at $24.15/hour.
  • On-call duties outside of core business hours.
