About The Position

This Electrical Field Service Specialist- Switchgear role serves as a key technical resource supporting Rehlko generator paralleling switchgear systems across a wide range of customer environments. The Field Service Specialist is responsible for delivering hands-on support including system start-ups, commissioning, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and upgrades, while ensuring optimal performance and reliability. This role will be working closely with distributors, contractors, customers, and internal teams. This position will lead onsite activities, verify complex electrical, control, and communication systems, and provide operator training. The Electrical Field Service Specialist- Switchgear role requires strong expertise in power systems, PLC/HMI programming, and network communications, along with the ability to independently solve complex technical issues, manage field activities, and deliver high-quality results in a fast-paced, travel-intensive environment.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Electromechanical Design, Electronic Engineering Technology/related field, or a High School Diploma and 2 years of electrical/generator or switchgear experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Electrical Engineering or equivalent in testing of paralleling switchgear, transfer switches, protective relays, or other electrical power distribution equipment.
  • Proven experience in the operation & troubleshooting of PLC/HMI programming is required.
  • Must be hard-working, self-starter, reliable, customer focused, quality driven, & resourceful
  • Must have moderate understanding of administrative programs (Excel, Outlook, Adobe)
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to follow directions from Senior level technicians and Supervisor – Field Service – Switchgear, PS.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to Distributors, Direct Customers, Electrical & General Contractors, as well as internal customers.
  • Create cases to track open issues and ensure timely resolutions for all customer requests.
  • Independently verify system operation, conduct operator training, and document all site visits, including but not limited to field start-ups/commissioning, system modifications, and preventative maintenance.
  • Track and provide documentation corrections for proper document revision.
  • Assist engineering team in conducting & documenting factory testing and customer witness testing.
  • Conduct wiring checks to verify control power distribution and component operation using proper test equipment. (0-125VDC & 0-13.2kVAC)
  • Be proficient in the use of all PLC, HMI, and other component software programs for proper setup, operation, troubleshooting and necessary programming modification.
  • Independently verify correct operation of control components including but not limited to PLC, HMI, metering, protective relays, circuit breakers, etc. per contract documents.
  • Independently verify correct operation of all communication circuits including but not limited to Ethernet (TCP/IP), RS232/485, Modbus, Modbus+, fiber, BACnet, customer SCADA systems, etc.
  • Work with REHLKO distributors (and third-party vendors as needed) to verify operation of generators, ATS’s, remote annunciators and other devices connected to generator parallel system.
  • Manage onsite project vendors and activities to ensure efficient/successful startup/upgrade.
  • Maintain documentation, customer signoffs, trip reports, drawings, sequence of operation, component serial numbers, system setpoints, software/firmware versions, etc.
  • Understand the functionality of all components within and connected to switchgear systems, including but not limited to generator/alternator, voltage regulators, generator controllers, automatic transfer switches, etc.
  • Understand how specific load types affect generator performance.
  • Properly adjust generator speed and voltage biases for proper synchronizing, loading/unloading, and KW/kVar sharing.
  • Submit customer feedback to the quality department to formally track product issues.
  • Provide feedback regarding the design of switchgear systems, PLC and HMI programming, circuit design, sequence of operation, etc.
  • Provide solutions to issues encountered.
  • Possess knowledge to modify component programming (PLC/HMI, etc.)
  • Understand scope of work prior to site visits. Review submittals & orders, system schematics, wiring diagrams, sequence of operation, component manuals, etc.
  • Manage costs related to onsite work, including but not limited to travel and expense.
  • Mentor in-coming associates to the department and provide feedback to others.
  • Review and process switch gear warranty claims.
  • Update product and department procedures.
  • Understand governing codes related to industries where generator paralleling systems are installed (i.e. – NFPA110, etc.).
  • Complete day-to-day activities with little supervision.
  • Work on special projects as required.
