The Electrical Engineering Technician II is responsible for supporting engineering projects through hands-on electronics assembly, soldering, cable/harness fabrication, and system-level integration. This role combines prototype build and test responsibilities with cable routing, harness manufacturing, and troubleshooting across lab and field environments. The technician operates with limited supervision and contributes to both electrical and electromechanical systems development.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree or technical certification preferred
  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience in electrical/electronics technician roles
  • Strong expertise in soldering (SMT and through-hole) and electronic assembly
  • Experience with cable harness manufacturing, routing, and integration
  • Ability to read and interpret complex schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable drawings
  • Proficiency with lab instrumentation (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.)
  • Familiarity with IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards (certification preferred or willingness to obtain)
  • Experience troubleshooting at board and system level, including cabling and interconnects
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork/interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, both within and outside one's own work group
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Sigma Design Core Values

Responsibilities

  • Build, assemble, and test electrical prototypes, subassemblies, and fixtures from engineering drawings and schematics
  • Perform precision soldering (SMT and through-hole) for R&D and production builds
  • Manufacture, terminate, and label cable harnesses to print for prototypes and test systems
  • Route and integrate cabling within assemblies, robots, and test rigs per engineering specifications
  • Troubleshoot electrical, soldering, and cable-related issues at component, board, and system levels
  • Execute and document test procedures, capturing accurate and detailed results
  • Provide feedback to engineers on schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable drawings for clarity and manufacturability
  • Modify, repair, or replace cables and electrical components in lab and field environments as needed
  • Maintain cable harness equipment (e.g., stripping machines, crimpers) and lab/test tools
  • Ensure compliance with IPC and WHMA standards, including IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620
  • Follow ESD protocols and maintain ESD-safe workspaces and handling practices
  • Track inventory and usage of electrical and cable components
  • Maintain organized, clean, and efficient work areas to support rapid builds and testing
  • Participate in cross-functional support efforts to meet project timelines (“all hands on deck” as needed)
  • Contribute to documentation, process improvements, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Follow Business Technology policies to protect sensitive data and reduce information security occurrences.
