About The Position

Circuit Spring is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead electrical and embedded systems development while actively contributing as an individual technical expert. This is a working-manager role where approximately 60–70% of time is spent directly on engineering work, with the remainder focused on technical leadership, mentoring early-career engineers, and collaborating with OEM customers. The Engineering Manager serves as the primary technical interface for multiple customer programs, guiding products from concept through production while ensuring designs are manufacturable, reliable, and aligned with customer and regulatory requirements. This role works closely with production, quality, and cross-functional teams, as well as leveraging the broader engineering expertise available through Circuit Spring’s parent company, Labconco.

Requirements

  • Proficient in PCB CAD software for layout and design, schematic capture tools, and generating manufacturing documentation (gerbers, BOMs, fabrication notes)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of PCB manufacturing processes with the ability to identify process failures and implement corrective actions
  • Expertise with software IDE tools for embedded programming, particularly C language development with communication protocols (UART, I2C, USB, RS485)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work directly with customers, manufacturers, and cross-functional teams
  • Ability to analyze data and perform engineering calculations typical of a four-year engineering degree
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
  • Skilled at component-level electrical/electronic assembly with strong soldering capabilities
  • Proficient use of electronics test equipment, including oscilloscopes and DMMs
  • Demonstrated ability to design for manufacturability, cost optimization, parts availability, and production efficiency
  • Ability to legally drive a vehicle and travel as required (approximately 5%)

Responsibilities

  • Develop schematics, layouts, and diagrams for electrical systems (PCB and add-on sensors/etc as needed) based on project/customer requirements. Ensure that designs comply with safety standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Create and modify PCB designs using CAD software for multiple EOMs, generating complete manufacturing documentation including gerbers, BOMs, and fabrication notes. Maintain organized file packages for multiple customer projects.
  • Produce embedded software using C programming language to implement into new products as well as modify existing products.
  • Program embedded software using C programming language to implement into new products as well as modify existing products.
  • Program microcontrollers (including ATmega family and others) for various electrical system functions, utilizing datasheets and compilers to implement communication protocols such as UART, I2C, USB, and RS485.
  • When source code is in-house developed, debug software to identify issues with new and existing products.
  • Research, evaluate, and select appropriate components for electrical systems, prioritizing cost optimization, parts availability, and manufacturability to ease production labor and procurement process.
  • Perform component-level troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, DMMs, and other test equipment. Work directly with production to identify failure trends in products and test fixtures, implementing timely corrective actions.
  • Work with OEMs from the customer requirements stage, prototyping up to and through the implementation and production stage on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Travel to OEM sites to help implement products into existing systems as well as troubleshoot issues.
  • Work as main contact for multiple projects/products.
  • Design fixtures and software needed in production to functionally test PCBs/PCBAs.
  • Develop high-quality written test procedures for new PCB/PCAs for implementation into production.
  • Stay updated on advancements in PCB and electrical engineering technology, tools, and techniques. Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to the enhancement of engineering practices within the organization.
  • Serve as primary technical interface with OEM customers, guiding them through design advancement, technical problem-solving, and product development decisions.
  • Mentor and develop early-career engineers through hands-on coaching, technical guidance, and knowledge transfer.
  • Evaluate emerging PCB assembly technologies, tools, and processes; recommend and implement solutions that advance Circuit Spring’s technical capabilities.
  • Lead technical design reviews and cross-functional collaboration to ensure quality and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers and other disciplines to integrate electrical and mechanical designs, including: custom brackets, mounting schemes, housings, and test fixtures.
  • Collaborate with Labconco engineers, leveraging their expertise as a technical resource for product development and troubleshooting.
  • Monitor PCB manufacturing processes to identify failure points and improvement opportunities. Investigate root causes and implement solutions (e.g. stencil modifications for fine-pitch components) in collaboration with appropriate vendors.
