Position Summary: The Electrical Engineering Manager provides technical leadership and operational oversight for electrical engineering, manufacturing support, panel shop operations, and field support functions within the organization. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining electrical standards across product lines, supporting production and assembly teams, ensuring compliance with UL/ETL and NEC requirements, and managing a team of electrical engineers, technicians, and quality personnel. The Electrical Engineering Manager serves as the highest internal technical authority on electrical matters and interfaces directly with executive leadership, customers, vendors, and regulatory bodies. The role works cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and field service teams to ensure electrical systems are designed, built, and commissioned safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEE or BSEET); equivalent combination of education and experience considered
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, manufacturing, or industrial construction with at least 3 years in a leadership role
  • Demonstrated expertise with UL 508A industrial control panel design, fabrication, and listing compliance
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 79, and applicable UL product standards
  • Experience with electrical schematic and panel layout design using AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent software
  • Proven track record in QA/QC program development and execution in a manufacturing or construction environment
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Hands-on approach with a passion for workforce development.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Electrical Engineering
  • Master Electrician license (state-specific)
  • Experience in HVAC, refrigeration, or building mechanical systems manufacturing
  • Familiarity with VFD application engineering, motor controls, and building automation systems (BAS/BMS)
  • Experience with SCCR calculation methodologies and short circuit coordination studies

Responsibilities

  • Electrical Standards, Specifications & Documentation Develop and maintain internal electrical design standards, specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Define standards for electrical calculations, wire sizing, component selection, and wiring practices in accordance with NEC, UL/ETL, and company standards.
  • Review and approve electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, routing drawings, and control panel layouts.
  • Maintain revision-controlled documentation for electrical designs and product configurations.
  • Support product development teams by ensuring electrical designs are manufacturable and standardized across product lines.
  • Establish and publish component application standards including wire gauge sizing, terminal block selection, conduit routing, and labeling requirements Develop and manage submittal packages for OEM equipment including panelboard schedules, wiring schematics, and sequence of operations documents Electrical Production & Manufacturing Support Provide hands-on technical support to electrical assembly teams during equipment manufacturing.
  • Troubleshoot complex wiring, control circuits, and electrical integration issues during production Ensure electrical assemblies comply with design specifications, safety codes, and internal quality standards Support startup, programming, and commissioning of control systems and power distribution for HVAC equipment.
  • Work with manufacturing leadership to improve production efficiency, quality, and standardization.
  • Electrical Testing, Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement Develop and implement electrical testing procedures to verify product safety, functionality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Establish electrical inspection protocols and acceptance test procedures for factory equipment.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and internal verification processes before equipment shipment.
  • Lead root cause investigations for electrical failures and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on electrical design, manufacturing processes, and quality performance.
  • Vendor Management & Material Selection Lead electrical component selection including drives (VFDs), circuit breakers, contactors, sensors, wiring, and controls.
  • Work with supply chain to evaluate and qualify electrical component suppliers.
  • Maintain an approved vendor list (AVL) and ensure components meet technical and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with vendors to resolve quality issues and improve product reliability.
  • Support standardization of electrical components across product lines to improve purchasing efficiency.
  • Negotiate technical requirements with vendors; review and approve product data submittals from suppliers Monitor supply chain risks for critical electrical components; develop approved alternates and buffer stock strategies Field Support & Commissioning Develop field installation quality standards and inspection checklists for use by installing contractors and commissioning agents Conduct or direct on-site QA/QC inspections of electrical installations at customer sites; issue field observation reports with corrective action requirements Provide field technical support for installation issues, startup problems, and commissioning challenges Review and respond to requests for information (RFIs) from installing contractors related to electrical scope Coordinate with commissioning teams to develop and review startup checklists and energization procedures Support warranty investigations in the field; determine root cause between manufacturing defects and installation-related failures Train contractor personnel and internal field service technicians on proper electrical installation and commissioning requirements Code Compliance & Regulatory Affairs Serve as the organization's technical authority on NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 79, UL 508A, and applicable product safety standards Monitor and interpret code cycle changes (NEC, NFPA, UL) and assess impact on product design, panel shop operations, and field installation requirements Manage relationships with listing agencies (UL, ETL/Intertek, CSA) for product certifications and shop listings Ensure all manufactured equipment meets applicable agency listing requirements prior to shipment Support sales and project management teams in interpreting authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements for specific projects Team Leadership, Training & Development Recruit, mentor, and manage a team of electrical engineers, designers, panel shop technicians, and quality inspectors Set performance expectations, conduct performance reviews, and develop individual growth plans for team members.
  • Foster a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement within the electrical team.
  • Coordinate team workload to support product development timelines and production demands Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the electrical knowledge and skills of assembly technicians, quality personnel, and engineering staff.
  • Establish qualification standards and certification processes for electrical technicians and panel shop personnel.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance on electrical design practices, troubleshooting techniques, and code compliance.
  • UL 508A Panel Shop Operations Oversee all activities within the UL 508A-certified panel shop including production scheduling, fabrication, wiring, and final testing Maintain UL 508A listing compliance; serve as primary point of contact with UL field representatives during follow-up inspections Direct Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR) calculations for all assembled control panels per UL 508A and NFPA 79 requirements Develop and enforce panel shop workmanship standards including wire management, ferrule crimping, terminal torque specs, and documentation requirements Implement and manage panel shop production metrics including throughput, first-pass quality rates, and rework tracking Ensure personnel training and qualification records are current for all panel shop employees; coordinate UL training requirements Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the shop to reduce cost, cycle time, and defect rates Future Work, Strategic Planning & Innovation Develop and maintain a multi-year electrical technology roadmap aligned with company product strategy and market trends Evaluate and lead integration of smart controls, IoT connectivity, and building automation system (BAS) interfaces into product offerings Assess emerging technologies including advanced motor drives, integrated power monitoring, and predictive diagnostics for incorporation into future products Partner with the Director of Engineering and executive leadership on capital planning for panel shop equipment, tooling, and facility upgrades Identify and implement electrical engineering efficiencies through automation, design standardization, and manufacturing process improvements Lead or support the evaluation of acquisition targets or partnership opportunities with electrical technology providers Develop succession planning and talent pipeline for the electrical engineering discipline within the organization
