About The Position

The Electrical Engineering Intern will work under the direction of an Electrical Engineering Supervisor to support all electrical design and documentation activities through the design and manufacturing process. This role will assist with creating drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation for low-, medium-, and high-voltage equipment and systems. The intern will gain exposure to industry codes and standards, manufacturing operations, and testing of finished electrical products, while collaborating closely with engineering, production, and testing teams.

Requirements

  • Foundational understanding of electrical power systems and components (e.g., switchgear, distribution panels, transformers, MCCs, protective devices).
  • Familiarity with or coursework in low-, medium-, or high-voltage power systems and basic concepts such as short-circuit current, load flow, and protection.
  • A Basic knowledge of relevant codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, IEC, NFPA) or willingness to learn.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD tools for electrical schematics and one-line diagrams (coursework or project experience acceptable).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); exposure to MRP/ERP systems is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to ask questions, seek clarification, and learn from senior engineers.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics and relate them to physical equipment and wiring.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for documenting work and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to manage multiple small tasks across different projects.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to take direction and work independently on well-defined tasks.
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field (e.g., Electrical & Computer Engineering).

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of core coursework in circuits, power systems, or industrial controls is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties in a safe manner and promote a “Safety First” mindset in all tasks.
  • Learn and apply ESSMetron’s design standards, codes, and manufacturing practices.
  • Assist in the selection of electrical materials and components (e.g., breakers, relays, panels, wiring devices) under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Help create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) in the MRP/ERP system for specific projects.
  • Assist in developing and revising AutoCAD one-line and three-line diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring schematics for assigned projects.
  • Prepare and update technical documentation, such as wiring lists, labels, test forms, and work instructions to support manufacturing and testing.
  • Support engineers in reviewing project specifications and customer documentation to ensure design and documentation compliance.
  • Help with basic cost analysis and value engineering tasks, such as comparing component options and identifying cost-saving opportunities under supervision.
  • Assist with testing and quality checks on electrical assemblies as needed, including documenting findings and updating test records.
  • Participate in design reviews, project meetings, and cross-functional discussions with engineering, production, and QA teams.
  • Perform other related duties and small engineering tasks as assigned to support ongoing projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
