About The Position

The Electrical Engineering II, Distribution is responsible for the planning, design, optimization, and oversight of electrical distribution systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of power. This position takes a leadership role in developing engineering solutions for new construction, system upgrades, and maintenance of distribution infrastructure, including overhead and underground systems (4–69 kV). This role applies advanced technical expertise to analyze system performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and support integration of emerging technologies such as distributed energy resources, renewable energy, and smart grid initiatives. This role includes significant project management, mentoring, and stakeholder coordination responsibilities, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, contractors, and utility partners. The Electrical Engineering II, Distribution is accountable for delivering high-quality engineering solutions that align with organizational objectives, operational requirements, and customer expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited institution in electrical engineering
  • 3–5 years of experience in electrical distribution system design, planning, and project execution.
  • Advanced knowledge of power systems, load flow, fault analysis, grounding, protection, and reliability engineering.
  • Strong expertise in overhead and underground distribution design, equipment sizing, and layout.
  • Familiarity with IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC, and local utility standards.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS-based design tools, and engineering analysis software.
  • Experience with DERs, energy storage, smart grid systems, and renewable integration.
  • Project management skills, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex distribution system challenges.
  • Effective leadership and mentoring skills to guide junior engineers and team members.
  • Clear written and verbal communication for technical reports, presentations, and stakeholder collaboration.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, constructability, and regulatory compliance in distribution engineering.
  • Commitment to staying current with emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and industry trends.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of GIS, Microsoft Office, Google Earth, AutoCAD, TED, Pole Loading Analysis software is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute designs for overhead and underground distribution systems (4–69 kV), including preparing field notes, detailed drawings, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Conduct and oversee field assessments, audits, and engineering walk-downs to document existing conditions and verify compliance with design standards.
  • Review, approve, and provide technical oversight for designs developed by junior engineers or external consultants to ensure accuracy, safety, and compliance with codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Lead system studies, including load flow, short circuit analysis, protective device coordination, and voltage drop assessments, applying advanced engineering principles.
  • Apply industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC, and local utility regulations) and company practices to develop robust, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Ensure constructability, operability, maintainability, and reliability are integrated into designs and processes.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and drafters, supporting technical development and professional growth.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including schedules, budgets, scope, and resources, ensuring deliverables meet quality and performance expectations.
  • Lead client and stakeholder communication for project updates, technical clarifications, and decision-making.
  • Support utility coordination, permitting, and regulatory reporting, acting as a technical point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies such as DERs, energy storage, grid modernization, and renewable integration to improve system performance and resilience.
  • Conduct risk assessments, reliability analysis, and root cause investigations for operational issues or outages, recommending corrective actions.
  • Promote and enforce adherence to safety, environmental, and engineering compliance standards throughout project lifecycle.
