Highly motivated Electrical Engineer to design, develop, maintain, and document electronic metabolic measurement instruments in collaboration with a team of multidisciplinary engineers and researchers. Evaluate existing systems, prototypes, and proposals, and develop electronic design improvements to create manufacturable products. Must have a strong foundation in circuit design, prototyping, and system integration. New Product Development Engineering activities such as: Design and develop electrical circuits, PCBs, and system architectures for new product development. Conduct validation and verification testing in a lab environment. Review PCB layouts for errors and omissions. Generate and maintain technical documentation, including schematics, specifications, drawings, and BOMs. Support the transition of products from development to manufacturing. Assemble electronic circuits using SMT. Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and EMC/ESD/CE requirements. Sustaining Engineering activities such as: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical components. Function as project lead for the ALPHA phase product development. Review firmware code and correct performance issues, reusability, and/or data anomalies. Lead Design Manufacturing Evaluation and Analysis meetings to identify potential failure modes for new products. Participate in and provide feedback in product design review meetings. Write and/or review design and manufacturing documentation for technical content and accuracy. Develop test plans and execute testing of electronic metabolic measurement instruments to investigate, analyze, and verify alternative designs, components, or systems. Execute and participate in Critical Design Reviews for new products and change requests for existing products. Research and evaluate new technologies, components, and methodologies to improve product design and performance. Other duties as assigned.

  • Proficient in electrical/electronic hardware design and development with both digital and analog electronic circuitry and components for double-sided, multi-layer, through-hole, and surface-mount technology (SMT) printed circuit designs.
  • Proficient in the design and layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Experience with communication protocols between software and hardware, such as USB, CAN, RS-232, RS-485, MODBUS, I2C, SPI, TCP/IP, among others.
  • Experience with alternate electrical component identification and qualification.
  • Experience with PCB failure root cause analysis.
  • Experience with the identification and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Experience with the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, and approaches to the analysis of electrical/electronic design issues.
  • Experience with the execution of functional, endurance, and environmental testing of mechatronic devices.
  • Experience with microelectronic assembly techniques, process controls, and production testing.
  • Proven technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Able to interpret Test Data and Specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of task execution and generate results with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Capable of effective time management and prioritization, and making progress on multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Comfortable with ambiguous project/task definition and able to propose alternative solutions to technical problems.
  • Proven ability to manage frequent change, delays, or unexpected events and still deliver results.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint, and Outlook software.
  • Effective communicator, both orally and in writing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • Five to ten years of related electrical/electronic design experience.
  • Proficiency in the use of C/C++ languages in developing device firmware, firmware applications, and microprocessor-based board-level design.
  • Experience with git and Subversion version control systems.
  • Experience with PSpice, Azure DevOps, EAGLE, and/or KiCad.
  • Experience with the use of 3D printing/laser-cutting for prototyping.
  • Experience with modern software languages such as C# .NET and Python.
  • Experience with Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes.
  • Experience with the design of precision low-volume electronic devices.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards such as CE, UL, RoHS, ISO, and FCC.
  • Experience in Scientific Research or technical/scientific instrumentation industries.
  • Experience with iOS and/or Android app development.
  • Experience with Bluetooth LE.
  • Experience with Arduino and/or Raspberry Pi.
  • A portfolio of designs created (hardware, firmware, or other).
  • Considers electronics/mechatronics a hobby and part of the maker community.
  • Experience or familiarity with EMC test standards.
  • Experience with the use of RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, amplifiers, and antennas for EMC pre-compliance testing.
  • Familiar with EMC/EMI design principles.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.
  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Five or more years of related electrical/electronic design experience.
  • Laboratory research and development experience.
