About The Position

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Principal Electrical Design Engineer leads and performs the design, development, and verification testing of advanced electrical and electronic systems for new product development efforts. This role serves as a technical authority in electrical engineering, detailed design, verification, and design transfer. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in circuit design, embedded systems, solid working knowledge of electrical safety and regulatory compliance, is passionate about driving innovation and design excellence and serves as the electrical design expert.

Requirements

  • PID control algorithms to enhance system responsiveness and stability across multi-axis platforms.
  • Expertise with both analog and digital circuitry design.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g. Cadence).
  • Strong understanding of PLCs, microcontrollers (Beckhoff, Omron, Allen-Bradley, etc.).
  • FPGAs, sensors, and communication interfaces (I2C, CAN, Ethernet, Modbus, Profinet).
  • Experience and expertise with EMC design and testing, grounding, and shielding best practices.
  • Familiarity with safety-critical or regulated product environments (e.g., medical, aerospace, automotive).
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory testing, instrumentation, and debugging tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.).
  • Proficiency with breadboard and prototype circuitry assembly.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking.
  • Collaborative and adaptable with cross-functional teams.
  • Setting up, maintaining and managing EE R&D lab space.
  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical product design and development, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership or principal engineer capacity, or 8+ years with a Master’s degree.
  • Proven track record of bringing products from concept through production.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analog and digital design, power management, and embedded systems.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, schematics, interconnects assembly and part drawings or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Windows programming languages; .NET and WPF.
  • Solid working knowledge of RF design, circuit behavior and heating technology.
  • Experience with ISO 9001, 13485, IEC 61131-3, and 21 CFR 820 quality systems and design controls.
  • Knowledge of system engineering practices and requirements traceability.
  • Experience in reliability engineering and lifecycle analysis.
  • Project management or technical lead experience in multi-disciplinary programs.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the strategic direction and vision for the electrical engineering design function, aligning it with the overall business objectives serving as the overall electrical design authority.
  • Performs and leads the electrical design and development of complex systems, including analog, digital, power, controls and mixed-signal circuits.
  • Own product electrical architecture from concept through production release.
  • Design, implemented, and optimized motion control systems for precision automation applications, including servo and stepper motor control.
  • Develop and review schematics, PCB layouts, and system interconnect diagrams using industry standard CAD tools, e.g. Cadence.
  • Perform detailed component selection, simulation, tolerance analysis, and failure mode evaluations (FMEA).
  • Direct, review and coach work of junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical mentorship and design guidance.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, software (firmware & GUI), and systems engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and system-level performance.
  • Define and execute electrical verification and validation test plans in alignment with design inputs and regulatory requirements.
  • Interface with manufacturing engineering to support design for manufacturability & testing and, and production test strategy development.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety, EMC, and regulatory standards (e.g., UL, IEC, FCC, ISO, CE).
  • Lead technical design reviews, risk assessments, and root cause analyses.
  • Support supplier selection, component qualification, and obsolescence management.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes, tools, and standards.
  • Ensures GMPs are followed in the product development cycle and mentors’ junior engineers in the proper usage GMPs and quality procedures.
  • Serve as an ad-hoc electrical design expert for other engineering functions.
  • Must be able to travel when the need arises.
