About The Position

General Matter is enriching uranium in America. Our mission is to restore our country’s ability to make nuclear fuel. Our fuel will help power AI, manufacturing, and other critical industries. It will power our next generation of reactors. Ultimately, it will power our national ambitions. We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and we are backed by top tier investors. Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production. We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability and transparency. Electrical Engineer - Instrumentation & Controls As an Electrical I&C Engineer, you will design, document, and implement ground-up electrical power, instrumentation, and control systems for both a new industrial enrichment facility and a range of advanced prototypes and R&D systems. This role spans control panel design, PLC-based automation, instrumentation, and hands-on system integration, with scope and responsibility determined by experience level. You will work across early R&D prototypes through full facility-scale systems, engaging directly with hardware throughout the lifecycle. Open to multiple levels of experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Experience in electrical design tool for control systems, such as AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, & EPLAN.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems architecture, circuit design, industrial instrumentation and control systems, PLC-based automation, and/or industrial communications protocols such as EtherCAT, CAN bus, Ethernet/IP, etc.
  • Ability to perform trade studies, reason from first principles, and make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing ground-up electrical and control systems for industrial facilities, pilot plants, or R&D environments.
  • Experience in industrial automation, chemical plants, process industries, or similar environments.
  • Control panel design experience, including schematics, layouts, and wiring documentation.
  • Familiarity with AC power systems, including breakers, relays, transformers, and three-phase power.
  • Familiarity with backup power systems, including UPS sizing, battery systems, generators, and critical load management.
  • Hands-on experience building, wiring, or commissioning industrial electrical systems.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, balancing technical rigor with practical constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Design and test ground-up electrical and controls systems for new facilities, advanced prototypes, and R&D systems.
  • Design, test, and integrate instrumentation and controls systems for industrial automation applications, including:
  • Control panel schematics
  • Wiring diagrams and I/O documentation
  • Panel layouts and harness documentation
  • Use electrical CAD tools to produce and maintain detailed drawings.
  • Design and support PLC-based controls systems, including instrumentation, field devices, and control architectures.
  • Design and analyze AC power systems for industrial equipment and control panels, including single-phase and three-phase power distribution.
  • Support design and integration of facility electrical infrastructure systems such as UPS systems, battery backup systems, generators, and backup power distribution.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate electrical, mechanical, process, and software systems.
  • Develop technical documentation and specifications for internal use, vendors, and contractors.
