About The Position

The Electrical Engineer Distribution Engineering position at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) involves working in the Distribution Engineering group to perform engineering tasks related to electric service interconnections. The role focuses on providing excellent customer service and resolving technical and contractual issues to meet customer needs. The Grid Planning Engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and optimization of SFPUC's electric utility grids, requiring expertise in power analysis and capital improvement planning. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical engineering, particularly in electric utilities and system coordination.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years verifiable professional electrical engineering work experience
  • Two (2) years experience equivalent to the 5207 Associate Engineer level or higher
  • Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in electrical Engineering

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of power system analysis (load flow, fault level, stability)
  • Familiarity with grid codes and interconnection standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, PG&E)
  • Experience with protection systems, SCADA, and automation
  • Proficient in power system simulation tools like SKM Power*Tools and ETAP
  • Experience in renewable interconnections

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain SFPUC's electric system models
  • Perform engineering analysis of requested interconnections to SFPUC's infrastructure
  • Provide good customer service and communicate SFPUC's grid requirements with stakeholders
  • Keep a record and track interconnection agreements
  • Perform power quality investigations and conduct site assessments
  • Prepare analysis, planning, and engineering design documents, cost estimates, and construction drawings
  • Ensure compliance with good utility practices and applicable codes and standards
  • Provide technical assistance and operational guidance for maintenance of existing systems
  • Assist with supervising other engineering job classes as workload increases
  • Integrate new interconnection projects to SFPUC's electrical system

  • Salary range: $169,806.00 - $206,414.00

  • Temporary Exempt appointment not exceeding 36 months
