About The Position

Hood Lumber, a division of Hood Industries, Inc. is seeking an Electrical & Controls Supervisor to join our Waynesboro lumber facility. This role provides hands-on technical leadership for plant automation, controls, and electrical systems while leading and developing a team of controls technicians and electricians to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This is an exciting time to join our team. We are currently constructing a new, state-of-the-art sawmill—demonstrating our long-term commitment to safety, operational excellence, and growth. Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience in electrical and instrument/control disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Proficiency in Control Logix and RS Logix programming, including hardware and firmware integration.
  • Experienced in configurating and maintaining devices on industrial networks using software interfaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, training, or mentoring technical personnel.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across departments.

Nice To Haves

  • 4-year degree in electrical, control systems and/or similar related field or equivalent experience OR
  • 2-4 years of professional electronic/ controls experience and 5-7 years of related industrial experience.
  • 3+ years’ experience in the use of advanced controls techniques through a combination of hands-on experience and specialized training on electrical and/or instrument/controls.
  • Knowledge of Cisco and Rockwell networking hardware, including Stratix switches and PowerFlex drives.
  • 1-2 years of experience in leading and developing technical direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop PLC Control Technicians and Electricians through effective performance management, training, mentoring, and succession planning to build a high-performing automation team.
  • Assist with training progression and skills development for the automation and controls team.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and engineering leadership to align controls strategy with plant objectives.
  • Assign work, establish priorities, and ensure adequate staffing to support production, maintenance, and capital project needs.
  • Participate in and ensure compliance with company safety programs, policies, and preventive maintenance initiatives.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable standards and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair instrument, electronic, and electrical equipment on the site to manufacturers specifications.
  • Provide advanced technical expertise in programmable logic control (PLC) systems, including design, development, programming, and optimization.
  • Design and develop graphical user screens utilized within human machine interfaces (HMI’s).
  • Modify control system logic and industrial machinery to improve equipment reliability, performance, and process control.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain industrial control networks, including ControlNet, DeviceNet, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Provide technical support for electrical equipment such as motors, switchgear, motor control centers, and variable frequency drives during start-up and day-to-day operations.
  • Oversee OEM electrical and control system modifications to ensure compliance with plant standards and operational requirements.
  • Evaluate and develop in-house plant instrumentation and automation resources.
  • Read and interpret pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic schematics, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Test, inspect, calibrate, and adjust control instrumentation and determine root causes of equipment or system malfunctions.
