About The Position

The Electric Motor Design Engineer - Electrical Engineer III position at Blue Origin focuses on the design and implementation of high-efficiency electric motors and generators for gas processing high-speed turbomachinery. This role is integral to the Lunar Transportation business unit, contributing to the development of Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander product lines and sustainable infrastructure for transporting crew and cargo to the lunar surface. The engineer will lead the complete life cycle of electric motor/generator components, from requirements definition to flight integration, within a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years' experience in electric motor design, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Fundamental knowledge of different types of electric motors such as permanent magnet synchronous motors, induction motors, brushless DC motors, and stepper motors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or related field.
  • Proficiency in electromagnetic fundamentals and software for electric motors/generators design such as ANSYS MotorCAD and Maxwell, COMOSOL, MotorSolver, and Matlab/Simulink.
  • Experience with electric motors manufacturing processes such as stator winding, lamination stacking, and stator varnishing.
  • Knowledge of motor control systems, including speed and torque control, sensor feedback, and closed-loop position.
  • Experience with FEA tools for structural and thermal analysis (ANSYS workbench preferred).
  • Familiarity with gas bearing turbomachinery components.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement high-efficiency electric motors and generators for cryocoolers and power systems.
  • Lead the complete life cycle of electric motor/generator components, including requirements definition, analysis, design, development, manufacturing, assembly, verification, integration, and flight.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of specialists, technicians, and engineers to develop and test cryocoolers for zero-boiloff applications.
  • Present complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and maintain positive professional relationships.
