About The Position

The Staff Engineer position at Xcel Energy involves joining the Distribution Planning team to help shape the future of the electric distribution grid. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles and the ability to develop long-term plans for electric power delivery, considering factors like electric vehicle charging and solar adoption. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with various teams, provide technical support, and may lead projects under the guidance of higher-level engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum (or recognized equivalency).
  • 0+ years relevant engineering experience for Engineer level; 2+ years for Staff Engineer; 5+ years for Sr. Engineer; 9+ years for Principal Engineer.
  • EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) preferred for Engineer and Staff Engineer levels; required for Sr. Engineer; PE (Professional Engineer) registration required for Principal Engineer.

  • Demonstrated unique technical skills and core competencies for the engineering level established by the organization.
  • Experience in leading projects and providing guidance to less experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Use and apply technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform complex engineering activities.
  • Support the development of technical documentation including designs, testing, calculations, and reports.
  • Provide ongoing technical support for project activities in Operations, Maintenance, and Regulatory areas.
  • Lead small to medium non-critical projects and coordinate critical projects under the direction of higher-level engineers.
  • Support bid and evaluation processes, including preparation of bid documents and technical evaluations.
  • Exchange information with inter-organizational teams and outside customers on complex matters.
  • Assign tasks and coordinate work of interns, drafters, technicians, and craft personnel.
