About The Position

The Electric Apprentice or Journeyman assists linemen in the construction, maintenance, and repair of power distribution systems. Duties involve climbing poles and handling high voltages (or learning to do so, for the Apprentice). This position works four 10-hour days plus mandatory standby duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Class "A" Oklahoma Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements
  • Maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
  • 7 to 11 months of experience
  • General knowledge equivalent to 2 years of college
  • 4 years of related experience and/or training
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certified in the four-year correspondence studies of the City of Edmond, Electric Lineman Apprenticeship Training Program as a Class I Lineman
  • Ability to read and interpret (or learn, for an Apprentice) electrical power circuit plans/specifications
  • Knowledge (or willingness to learn, for an Apprentice) of methods, practices, and equipment involved in electrical distribution system work
  • Willingness to perform standby duties
  • Availability and willingness for call-back during off-duty hours
  • Ability to meet the required physical standards for this position
  • Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug, physical, and audio screenings

Responsibilities

  • Start the certification process of the four-year correspondence studies of the City of Edmond Electric Department's Lineman Apprenticeship Training Program
  • Learn to climb poles and ride in the bucket to work on power lines
  • Learn construction standards, code requirements, and specifications
  • Learn the methods, practices, and equipment of electrical line maintenance, installation, and service
  • Assist team members with operating and maintaining the existing distribution system
  • Assist team members with constructing new distribution facilities
  • Perform work on non-energized circuits (with supervision)
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and materials and guard against loss or damage
  • Perform work on energized primary circuits and secondary circuits
  • Climb poles or utilize bucket attached to a truck-mounted boom
  • Construct, maintain, and repair distribution power lines
  • Ensure conformance to construction standards, code requirements, and specifications
  • Contact property owners to gain permission for accessing their property
  • Assume responsibilities of Lead Journeyman Lineman when assigned
  • Provide input about employee development
