About The Position

To provide academic English language development to long-term English Learner students in a Middle School setting. The English Language Development teacher works in a program designed to provide direct English Language Development instruction in the classroom, with small Groups and/or individual student settings. In addition to this specific individualized instruction, the EL teacher will assist general education classroom teachers with selection of appropriate curricula and the development of appropriate strategies to meet the unique needs of English Learners. The EL teacher will follow the California Department of Education English Language Proficiency Standards.

Requirements

  • California Teaching Credential (or ability to obtain by position start date)
  • Excellent written communication skills (as evidenced by application writing assignment)
  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English including correct usage of grammar, language forms and functions
  • Familiarity with the second language acquisition process and current research-based methods for teaching English learners
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, understand, and work effectively with students of linguistically and culturally diverse learners. Ability to resolve conflicts, maintain confidentiality, contribute to building a positive team spirit, and building a positive and respectful rapport with adolescence.
  • Sufficient vision to read material with or without vision aides
  • Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person conversations with students, teachers and parents
  • Sufficient voice volume to be heard at normal conversational distances
  • Ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time
  • Physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure stressful conditions
  • Use hands to touch, handle, reach, feel objects, controls, or tools
  • Ability to demonstrate gross and fine motor skills and movements to students
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of three years classroom teaching experience
  • Bilingual Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct instruction to pupils in English Language Development (ELD) and in other subject areas as needed.
  • Provides primary language support as needed to make new learning comprehensible to students.
  • Assesses and observes students in order to determine the appropriate strategies and approaches to be utilized to make instruction most effective for Long-term English Learners.
  • Keeps records on individual pupil progress and assists in pre and post testing for entering and exiting pupils.
  • Collaborates with other teachers in planning instruction and grouping students for focused instruction.
  • Attends all District Staff Development related to English Language Development methodology.
