About The Position

The EL Teacher at Carson High School will teach related curriculum and programs for English Language Learner (ELL) students in public schools. The teacher will implement appropriate educational curriculum based on the Nevada State Standards and the Carson School District expectations. The role involves creating and maintaining an educational atmosphere that encourages effective student learning and supports school and district programs and goals. The teacher is expected to adhere to the Nevada Educator Performance Framework (NEPF). This position begins the 2025-2026 school year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.
  • Must possess a Nevada license endorsed for the specific subject(s) and to perform other educational functions at the level and in the field for which he/she is to be employed.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as handbooks and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students and staff.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of student information software, Internet software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.

Responsibilities

  • Administer appropriate district curriculum aligned with the Nevada State Standards.
  • Follow mandated compliance standards established by Federal, State, or District regulations relative to ESL program development and implementation.
  • Demonstrate mastery of content and pedagogy (ESL), knowledge of students and resources, set instructional outcomes for diverse learners, and design coherent instruction and student assessments aligned to Common Core State Standards and WIDA.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies aligned with instructional objectives to meet the needs of English Language Learners.
  • Track progress of identified LEP students.
  • Implement effective staff development related to language acquisition.
  • Coordinate and administer the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA) as required by the district and state.
  • Maintain, interpret, and appropriately distribute results of the ELPA and other assessments as required by the district and state.
  • Ensure that parents of LEP students are given the opportunity to fully participate in their student's education.
  • Assist parents of LEP students with school registration, parent conferences, and home learning skills.
  • Communicate to parents via phone calls, meetings, and correspondence, translating into the parent's primary language when possible.
  • Inform parents of LEP students about the reasons for placing their student in LEP language instruction program, student's level of English proficiency, methods of instruction to be used, how the program will meet educational strengths and needs, program exit requirements, and options for parental involvement.
  • Provide evaluation and testing for non-English speaking and limited proficiency students.
  • Provide instruction to each ESL/LEP student appropriate to his/her level as determined by formal assessment.
  • Maintain records for each student's individual and academic instructional program.
  • Provide referral to existing guidance and counseling as well as other support resources within the district where appropriate.
  • Provide assessment for newly arriving non-English speaking students.
  • Confer with classroom teachers regarding each student's progress within the ESL Program.
  • Participate in in-service and teacher training provided by the district.
  • Meet with the ESL Director at regular intervals.
  • Assign grades to ESL students.
  • Provide support and resource information to ESL ParaProfessionals and classroom teachers.
  • Assist in project implementation.
  • Ensure the opportunity for all students to learn in a supportive environment.
  • Create and maintain a positive, orderly, and academically focused learning condition in the instructional environment.
  • Develop and implement the components of an effective lesson for instruction.
  • Analyze student progress and provide appropriate instruction.
  • Provide a classroom management/discipline plan ensuring safety at all times.
  • Ensure assessment regulations and guidelines are followed at all times.
  • Develop a classroom climate that promotes positive learning conditions.
  • Work professionally with administration, staff, parents, and community.
  • Integrate technology into the instructional program.
  • Participate in other job-related duties and activities related to the position as assigned.
  • Instruct students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
  • Prepare course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school.
  • Assign lessons and correct homework.
  • Administer tests to evaluate pupil progress, record results, and issue reports to inform parents of progress.
  • Keep attendance records.
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
