Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures and safety protocols.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for basic data entry and documentation.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift/carry field equipment (up to approximately 40 lbs).
  • Valid drivers license and acceptable driving record.
  • Willingness to travel for fieldwork within Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Ability to learn standard environmental field methods with on-the-job training.
  • Ability to accurately record field observations, complete forms, and maintain organized documentation.
  • Ability to follow instructions from senior staff for sampling, equipment use, and site procedures.
  • Basic understanding of environmental science concepts from coursework (soil, groundwater, geology), with all task-specific training provided.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office for entering data, organizing photos, and supporting simple report components.
  • Ability to progress toward independently conducting routine groundwater monitoring or drilling oversight events within the first several months.
  • Willingness to perform a mix of field and office work, with the balance varying by season and workload.
  • Ability to travel for both local day-trips and occasional out-of-town field events.
  • Overnight travel varies by season and project workload, but typically occurs 1 to 2 times per month, with most overnight stays lasting 1 to 2 nights, and occasional trips up to 3 or 4 nights.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to ask questions and learn from senior staff.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and a positive attitude toward growth and long-term development within the department.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and, after training, independently conduct groundwater monitoring, soil sampling, vapor sampling, and drilling oversight.
  • Collect, label, and document samples in accordance with project procedures and regulatory guidance.
  • Maintain complete and accurate field notes, logs, photographs, and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Perform data entry, organize field data, and assist with preparing tables, figures, and basic report components.
  • Follow site-specific health and safety plans and participate in job hazard analyses.
  • Communicate site conditions, schedule updates, and field observations to project managers and senior staff.
  • Prepare and maintain field equipment, coolers, and sampling supplies; assist with sample shipping and logistics.
  • Support project managers with coordination tasks and day-to-day project needs.
