About The Position

With minimal supervision, the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible to provide EHS guidance, supervision and support to the workforce.  Learn EHS codes and standards, accident prevention principles, and their application to industrial operations; to learn techniques of making field inspections, conducting investigations, and identifying hazards; and to learn other relevant skills.  Conduct daily inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of Sub-Contractors) are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and NASSCO EHS policies and procedures; identify EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiates corrective action through production supervision.  Prepare written reports on inspections, accident investigations, employee complaints or concerns.  Conducts various EHS training classes as required, (new hire safety orientation; employee recall safety orientation) and other specialized safety training.  Conduct subcontractor safety orientation.   Supports and commits to organization and Company’s mission, vision, and values.

Requirements

  • Typically has a High School diploma or GED; with typical six (6) to ten (10) years of directly related EHS experience or a BA Degree with four (4) to seven (7) years in a related field.
  • Knowledge of OSHA record keeping requirements and familiarity with basic medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local Environmental requirements.
  • Continuing education in approved Environmental, Health and Safety related courses towards a Professional Certificate.
  • Applicable Federal and State OSHA regulations
  • Presentation techniques for Environmental, Health and Safety training
  • Techniques used to recognize EHS hazards
  • Working with hazardous materials
  • Ship configuration and Shipbuilding techniques and shipyard operations
  • Safe operation of tools and machinery
  • Computer software programs.
  • Interact with customers, subcontractors and vendors on behalf of the company.
  • Independently controlling EHS programs at offsite locations.
  • Must have a valid US Passport and be willing to travel internationally for short periods of time
  • Emergency first aid certified, HAZWOPER certified, Bloodborne pathogen, Shipyard Competent person.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair.
  • Inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing the use of tools and operations of equipment/machinery.
  • Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding.
  • Physically able to walk to all yard locations.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations.
  • Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.
  • Must be able to spend up to 80% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates.
  • The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 75% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
  • Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferably in Industrial Safety or Environmental Compliance or significant experience in shipyard trade operations and typical four (4) years of experience performing the EHS inspection duties.
  • Preferably has OSHA 5410 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry training.
  • Preferably has OSHA 3095 Electrical Standards training.
  • Preferably has OSHA 3115 Fall Protection
  • Preferably has OSHA 521 OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of Sub-Contractors) are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and NASSCO EHS policies and procedures; identify EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiate corrective action through production supervision
  • Prepare written reports on inspections, accident investigations, statistical information on injuries and illnesses, employee complaints or concerns.  Write articles for EHS Grams, Gangbox topics or other training programs.  Review reports and articles generated by subordinates.
  • Maintain environmental reporting requirements to Federal, State and Corporate
  • Candidate will maintain OSHA 300 Logs; ensure incident and accident investigation is completed in a timely manner and corrective actions followed through.  Prepare, maintain and communicate current incident rates.
  • Conduct various safety training classes as required, (new hire safety orientation; employee recall safety orientation) and other specialized safety training.  Conduct subcontractor safety orientation.
  • Review current literature and trade publications in order to remain current regarding all OSHA and other applicable EHS standards and regulations.
  • Attend and conduct EHS related meetings with all levels of management, employee safety committees and other production training sessions.
  • Establish a close working relationship and communicate with department, stage, area and ship managers on a regular basis.
  • Use of computer software programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
