The Role: As the Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist (EH&SS), you will join our Environmental, Health & Safety and provide technical expertise, training, and hands-on support across our manufacturing facilities to strengthen our safety culture, reduce risk, and enhance environmental and sustainability performance. This position reports directly to the Site EHS&S Manager.

  • Maintain the EH&SS Management System, including the deployment of EH&SS programs and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines; EH&SS policies, procedures, initiatives; and Industry Best Practices.
  • Ensure compliance with the EH&SS Program by all site personnel, visitors and contractors through appropriate awareness level and task-specific training
  • Participate on the Site EH&SS Committee in support of the EH&SS Management System and serve as a technical resource to local management as the EH&SS Specialist.
  • Work closely with the EH&SS Manager and Site Leadership to ensure continual improvement and compliance with all EH&SS activities in support of the EH&SS Management System.
  • Participate and conduct in Site Audits & Inspections, Risk Assessments, and Incident Investigations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, prevent the escalation and occurrence of injuries, identify potential risks, and ensure the timely close out of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Support incident investigations to ensure appropriate root cause and mistake proof solutions are implemented throughout the facility. Participate in site investigations, as required.
  • Facilitate the completion of hazard assessments, including but not limited to PPE, ergonomic, machine guarding, confined space, fall protection, and risk assessments.
  • Develop and maintain key safety documents, such as JSAs/JHAs, Energy Control Procedures, Audit Templates, etc.
  • Facilitate and manage the Site Security Process, Security Plan, and Emergency Planning and Response Process.
  • Support implementation of the Behavioral-Based Safety Program with a focus on Safety as a Core Value within the Site through resource partnerships in the following areas and activities:
  • Provide regulatory and practical training, as applicable through the implementation of the Site Training Plan. Create new training materials, as required.
  • Support the Site’s EH&SS Management of Change process. Support the evaluation of EH&SS impacts to the facility, employees, and permits prior to the implementation of change.
  • Adheres to company policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of programs for compliance with all applicable local, State and federal regulations.
  • Support sustainability and environmental awareness programs.
  • Maintain records and documents in compliance with all regulatory and internal recordkeeping requirements and provide statistical data on safety performance.
  • Assist in the preparation and submittal of regulatory reports, notifications, and communications with regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in the scheduling and delivery of EH&SS training, including the preparation of training materials, logging of training records, and tracking of training completion.
  • Collect, analyze, and trend key leading indicators, such as safety milestones, employee concerns, action items, etc in order to facilitate the routine metrics reporting process.
  • Conduct, facilitate, and accurately document routine audits and inspections.
  • Conduct daily facilities patrols to ensure safety guidelines are being met.
  • Participate in incident investigations, assisting in the identification of root cause, contributing factors, and corrective actions utilizing appropriate root cause investigation techniques. Work directly with action owners to drive corrective and preventative actions to closure.
  • Issue safety communications and alerts, as needed, enhancing employee knowledge of safety hazards and risks, detailing root cause of accidents/injuries and corrective actions to prevent future occurrences, and identifying at risk behaviors or scenarios that have the potential to cause injuries/accidents.
  • Facilitate the reduction of exposure to occupational hazards and work with employees and supervisors on control measures to reduce exposure. Recognize and evaluate conditions that are potentially hazardous to employee health, the environment, facilities, equipment, and product to determine root cause and provide corrective action that eliminates repeat occurrences.
  • Maintain, track, and report chemicals, their usage, emissions, and compliance with Federal and State regulations. Ensure all required records are prepared and maintained.
  • Assist with environmental compliance programs including waste management, air emissions, stormwater, and spill response
  • Support energy reduction and sustainability initiatives aligned with corporate goals.
  • Ensure contractor compliance with site procedures and guidelines, including training/orientation, and interim contractor management.
  • Serve as a representative of the EHS&S Department and assume key responsibilities in the absence of the EHS&S Manager.
  • Partner with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to integrate EHSS into daily processes.
  • Recommend and implement administrative and engineering controls to reduce risk.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. An ability to communicate clearly and professionally with all levels of employees, leadership, consultants, and regulatory entities.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking methods: define problems, collect and interpret relevant data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and implement countermeasures.
  • Ability to lead key initiatives, facilitate team interactions, and delivery results.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from employees and/or customers.
  • Ability to research, prepare, and format training and other written communications to effectively present information to employees, senior leadership, public groups, or regulatory agencies.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, EPA/IEPA standards, and general industry best practices.
  • Experience with risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety training delivery.
  • Minimum 5+ years of environmental, health and safety management experience. This position is approximately 75% safety and 25% environmental.
  • Experience in industrial manufacturing (machining or metal working preferred) with strong working knowledge of fire safety, welding, electrical safety / LOTO, machine guarding, mechanical ventilation, manual handling, and ergonomics.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to safety, health, and environmental programs.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and managing EH&SS plans and programs, strongly desired but not required.
  • Prior experience with recordkeeping or managing databases, desired.
  • Prior experience with EHS Training Software (Cornerstone, Eco Online, etc.) and Data Management Systems preferred.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Work location will primarily be onsite at our Cary facility. Must be able to participate in company paid visits to manufacturing and field locations, if needed.
  • Must be able to lift 33 pounds.
  • ASP, CSP, CHMM, or similar certification (or willingness to pursue) a plus.
