About The Position

The EHS Coordinator provides technical and administrative support to maintain a safe, compliant, and efficient laboratory environment. This role is responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of hazardous materials - from initial receipt and inventory management to the compliant shipping and disposal of regulated waste. Serving as a key operational link, the Coordinator ensures facility readiness through safety inspections, emergency equipment oversight, and the consistent provisioning of PPE for labs. This role reports to the Associate Director, Operational Excellence and requires you to be onsite at our South San Francisco office 5 days per week.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field
  • 2–3 years of experience in an EHS role, preferably within a laboratory, clinical, or manufacturing setting.
  • Familiarity with GHS (Globally Harmonized System) and SDS management.
  • Basic understanding of NIH guidelines for recombinant DNA and biosafety.
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to communicate technical safety requirements to scientists, and high attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour: Preferred for managing chemical spills.
  • DOT/IATA: Certification for the shipping of hazardous materials/biological samples.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the intake of chemicals, maintain the site chemical inventory, and lead periodic reconciliation efforts.
  • Coordinate collection, labeling, and disposal of chemical and biological waste; maintain waste rooms according to RCRA and local regulatory standards.
  • Support compliance and reporting for environmental permits, including wastewater discharge and Hazardous Materials Business Plans (HMBP).
  • Act as site SME for DOT/IATA regulations, prepare, package, and document regulated shipments with proper labeling, and secondary containment.
  • Conduct routine safety walkthroughs of labs, storage areas, and mechanical rooms to identify hazards and ensure OSHA/ EPA compliance.
  • Manage inspection and certification schedules for safety-critical equipment, including fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, safety showers, and AED’s.
  • Document workplace injuries and near-misses, assist in root cause analysis, and track corrective actions to completion.
  • Inventory and stock all lab PPE, ensuring a continuous supply of gloves, safety glasses, and lab coats.
