Requirements

  • Be current in Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or comply within one month of employment.
  • This person must sign an oath of permanent confidentiality covering all patient related information.
  • This person must receive a background check from the Washington State Patrol.
  • The new employee shall sign and date the job description to affirm the validity of the information herein, and to signify compliance with the conditions of employment.
  • An Expanded Functions dental assistant position must be open in order to apply for the position.
  • Have the ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Must be able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or other members of the health profession.
  • Have the ability to calculate basic mathematical figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions and percentages.
  • Have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Have a basic understanding of the concepts of bio-statistical analyses.
  • Have completed formal training and received Certification to practice as an Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary, from a College, Technical Institute or other formal programs, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  • The applicant must have an initial TB test at hire and an annual retest.
  • Pre-hire and annual employee health screening required
  • Annual influenza vaccine required. Only exception is for employees with a medical or religious exemption approved by Administration. Employees with an approved medical or religious exemption must wear a mask at all time during the flu season.

Responsibilities

  • Must be able to assist the dental provider in the delivery of dental procedures and performing reversible dental procedures allowed by the Washington State Dental Practice Act.
  • Be able to greet, sit and dismiss patients and assist in giving instructions to patients before, after and during dental procedures. Must be courteous and professional at all times when talking to patients or discussing confidential information.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the proper sterilization methods and OSHA regulations. Utilize the Sterilization Room to process instruments through proper sterilization process. Follow amalgam safety protocol.
  • Must be able to triage patients, coordinate dental appointments, coordinate the daily activities that pertain to patient flow and communicate accurately with dental patients.
  • Be able to perform the responsibilities outlined in the “Task & Duty List” (Dental Department Policy # 900.181).
  • Be able to use personal judgment, initiative, and leadership assisting in the coordination of patient scheduling, patient flow and oversight of supply inventory and equipment maintenance.
  • Place, carve, finish, and polish direct restorations.
  • Take preliminary and final impressions and bite registrations, to include computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacture applications.
  • Perform coronal polishing.
  • Give fluoride treatments.
  • Apply sealants.
  • Place, expose, and process radiographs.
  • Give patient oral health instructions.
