About The Position

Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) is looking to hire a part-time educator to facilitate, on Mondays, K-12 school programs and public programming, as needed, throughout Brooklyn Bridge Park and indoors at the Environmental Education Center. The ideal candidate is an experienced, engaging STEM educator and facilitator who can teach a wide range of subjects to highly diverse audiences. As the programs are experiential and inquiry-based, the role is ideal for an educator who has the ability to seamlessly pivot among different pedagogical approaches and subject matters. The candidate sincerely loves to teach and to spark lifelong learning and curiosity about the environment, both natural and built.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of urban environmental science, built environment, art making, ecology, estuaries, waterfront history and sustainability.
  • Experience teaching diverse audiences in informal education and/or outdoor settings.
  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to adapt teaching style and content to meet the diverse needs and age ranges of students.
  • Self-starter with a can-do attitude; comfortable working both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong time management and communication skills.
  • Commitment to positive youth development and DEIJ work in outdoor, park-like settings.
  • Comfortable engaging with and speaking to the public.
  • Excitement and desire to jump in and try new areas of content, including art and culture.
  • Ability to engage and actively participate in creative processes with fellow educators and peers.
  • Hardworking, self-motivated, and detail oriented.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and tasks.
  • Flexible and solutions oriented.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Environmental Science, Ecology, Marine Biology, Museum Studies, or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach K-12 field trips both outside throughout the park and indoors at the Environmental Education Center, especially the school programs:
  • “Building the Brooklyn Bridge,” centering on historic narrative and engineering topics, including bringing the class onto the Brooklyn Bridge itself;
  • “Habits and Their Inhabitants,” which includes animal handling (turtles) and a “making” component; and
  • Other lessons as needed.
  • Facilitate other drop-in public education programs, like summer camp, fundraising events, community outreach initiatives, and other activities, as required.
  • Preparing, transporting, setting up, and breaking down education program materials at sites across Brooklyn Bridge Park and within the education center.
  • Participating in the department-wide maintenance of education spaces and supplies.
