About The Position

The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire an Educator to teach standard and special education course work to students who have visual impairments and blindness at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville. The Educator provides Braille instruction and/or produces Braille materials to blind and visually impaired students. This position conducts ongoing evaluations of assigned students and adjusts instruction accordingly and based on individual student needs. The incumbent completes a variety of related documents and reports utilizing software, daily attendance, student progress, discipline, and grades. This position also requisitions and supervises the care and use of supplies and equipment. The Division is looking to hire a detail-oriented Educator with good communication and leadership skills to start the 2026 – 2027 school year.

Requirements

  • Requires possession of a current and valid ISBE-issued Professional Educator License with endorsement appropriate for Teacher of Students who are blind or visually impaired prekindergarten through age 22.
  • Requires proficiency in Braille when instructing students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Must meet Illinois School for the Visually Impaired health and safety requirements.
  • Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of professional experience working with media used for students who have visual impairments and blindness such as Braille and or other technologies.
  • One (1) year of professional experience utilizing current educational trends, techniques, and best practices.
  • One (1) year of professional experience preparing written documentation related to student performance and education.
  • One (1) year of professional experience using the tools, materials and equipment associated with required coursework.
  • One (1) year of professional experience maintaining patience and tolerance while working with students with a wide range of behaviors.
  • One (1) year of professional experience maintaining effective working relationships with staff, assigned students and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches standard and special education course work to students who have visual impairments and blindness.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of assigned students.
  • Assists in the development and continuing evaluation of a sequential instructional curriculum to meet the needs of each student assigned.
  • Completes a variety of related documents and reports utilizing software, daily attendance, student progress, discipline, and grades.
  • Plans and assists appropriate school staff to provide semi-curricular and extracurricular activities to supplement the classroom education program.
  • Oversees the care and use of equipment and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
