Responsibilities This position is responsible for creating and implementing curriculum specifically designed for elementary school students (grades K–5), while fostering strong connections with their communities. This includes delivering developmentally appropriate programs and activities that spark curiosity and inspire conservation action.

  • Program Development & Facilitation Develops, implements, and evaluates elementary school programs.
  • Oversees the Columbus Zoo Teacher Advisory Council.
  • Represents the Columbus Zoo at school and community events.
  • Creates partnerships with schools and community organizations to ensure access to inclusive and equitable programming for Central Ohio youth.
  • Partners with other curriculum team members to align and support programming across various educational initiatives.
  • Consistently strives to further the mission of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium: Empowering People. Saving Wildlife.
  • Communication Collaborates with other departments to enhance school field trip experiences.
  • Creates and distributes a teacher e-newsletter.
  • Responds to information requests from students and teachers.
  • Utilizes technology to enhance educational programming and support classroom engagement and communication where necessary.
  • Program Design Designs, develops, implements, and evaluates curriculum-based elementary education programs.
  • Ensures elementary school activities are developmentally appropriate.
  • Implements sustainable practice in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Customer Focus Maintains confidential records related to program participants and billing.
  • Builds relationships with schools and teachers.
  • Adaptability & Problem-Solving Ability to maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations.
  • Problem solves and adapts quickly in a variety of settings and situations.
  • Communication Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Program Design Knowledge of education program development and evaluation.
  • Understanding of STEAM education principles and how to incorporate them into elementary activities.
  • Demonstrated creative mindset.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Customer Focus Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with program participants and Zoo guests.
  • Educational Requirements Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required.
  • Minimum one year of teaching elementary age students, or related experience.
  • Knowledge of basic education principles, specifically those related to STEAM concepts.
  • Annual First Aid training and annual CPR training.
  • Other Requirements Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and technology.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols.
  • Ability to pass TB screening, adhere to drug-free workplace policies, and complete FBI/BCI background check.
