About The Position

The purpose of the Talent Search (TS) Advisor is to serve as a mentor and guide to students participating in the Talent Search program, and assist them through the policies and procedures needed for admission and completion of a college degree. The overall result of the Talent Search Advisor role is to provide one-on-one guidance to students coming from low-resourced high schools as they navigate the nuances of academic requirements, post-secondary admission, and financial requirements for their successful admission and graduation from post-secondary institutions. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, education, behavioral/social sciences, social work, communications, or related field must be obtained by the start date.
  • At least one year of demonstrated knowledge of, and experience working within, communities of students with first-generation and limited/low-income backgrounds.
  • Pre-employment Background Check - Criminal and Motor Vehicle check.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and/or reliable personal transportation, and commitment to travel extensively in the funded to serve area, including travel to identified schools per the grant.
  • Additional travel requirements include in-state and out-of-state college tours to expose students to educational and academic experiences across the country.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to facilitate student learning and academic skills development.
  • Strong communication skills (speaking, writing, developing and presenting academic workshops, and/or presentations, and the use of computer applications)
  • Community relations experience (evidence of building collaborative community networks and programs, including work with school administrators and staff, community agencies)
  • Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) is desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and relevant ability with, culturally diverse communities among the potential target and constituent population
  • Experience in planning and coordinating student training or event planning
  • Record keeping and data management abilities, such as maintaining records regarding program activities, student eligibility, and performance, and submitting reports regarding student outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit qualified participants for the program and create a waitlist of potential candidates.
  • Regularly meet with parents or guardians of participating students and develop or deliver workshops for parent groups.
  • Meet one-on-one with program participants to assist with selecting courses that meet the HEAR (Higher Education Admission Requirements) for post-secondary universities.
  • Advisors monitor semester schedules to ensure students are progressing toward 4 years of math, 4 years of English, 2 years of language arts, and 3 years of science.
  • Work collaboratively with high school post-secondary counselors to provide options for students to enroll in Advanced Placement high school courses, enroll in dual-enrollment college courses, and/or take community college courses.
  • Maintain records of program activities, student eligibility, and performance.
  • Maintain a specified caseload of students and provide advising, workshops, and enrichment events for students.
  • Assist with planning and supervising several annual in-state and out-of-state, overnight multi-day trips to visit colleges/universities and expose students to regional/national educational, experiential, and career opportunities.
  • Assume a leadership role in one or more components of the summer residential program requirements, which may include residing in residence halls for short periods of time in summer to assist with student programming and supervision.
  • Plan and implement interactive and effective classes and/or workshops during the academic year and during summer programs; facilitate and implement after-school, weekend, and other instructional/tutoring sessions, and facilitate student access to academic resources in the target schools and community.
  • Other related duties.
