About The Position

We are looking for candidates who have a passion for helping court-involved youth. We are Working Together to Strengthen North Carolina’s Youth and Families! The primary duties and responsibilities of the Educational Developmental Assistant at Lenoir Youth Development Center include supporting instructional activities in core subject areas under the guidance of licensed teachers. This position involves assisting with lesson planning, preparing instructional materials, and delivering individualized or small group instruction to students, many of whom have learning disabilities. The assistant monitors student academic and behavior and progress, maintains data records, and provides written or verbal feedback. Additional duties include coordinating classroom activities, using educational technology, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive educational support for the students. The work unit is part of the Lenoir Youth Development Center, which operates under the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Division of Juvenile Justice. This unit is dedicated to educating and rehabilitating youth within a secure residential facility. It focuses on delivering structured educational services to juveniles, many of whom have learning disabilities, with the broader goal of reducing and preventing juvenile delinquency. The team within this unit works collaboratively across disciplines to provide individualized educational and behavioral support, helping youth progress academically while addressing their social and developmental needs.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience working with students in an educational environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with students, including understanding their unique educational needs and/or providing appropriate instructional support.
  • Experience with classroom management techniques.
  • Experience documenting student progress and working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience using classroom equipment and/or computer-based learning tools commonly used in educational settings.
