About The Position

This position is a 1:1 role assigned to a 1st grade male student, requiring the completion of the state mandated General Paraeducator Certificate. The Paraeducator Certificate Program offers training for paraeducators and supports career advancement. Staff must complete 28 hours of training on the Fundamental Course of Study within specified timeframes. The role involves assisting a certificated teacher with instructional and personal care needs for students with various disabilities, providing academic interventions, and supporting daily living activities.

Requirements

• Associate degree or 72 credit hours of post-secondary education or passing state test to demonstrate knowledge.
• One year of experience working with special needs individuals.
• CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to be trained within the first 90 days.
• Successful WSP and FBI background clearance.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of assigned developmental, behavioral, and/or physical disabilities.
• Knowledge of effective instructional methods for students with disabilities.
• Basic sign language skills.

Responsibilities

• Provides instruction to students individually or in small groups in assigned learning activities per direction of teacher.
• Instructs students in self-care activities and may perform diapering/toileting assistance.
• Supervises students during recess or lunch periods and assists with bus loading/unloading.
• Records student progress and maintains communication with classroom teacher and other staff.
• Adjusts position of students with physical disabilities and implements therapy as instructed.
• Prepares and serves lunches and snacks for students.
• Models positive behavior and corrects inappropriate behavior.
• Assists teacher in adapting materials and activities.
• Participates in department staff meetings and provides information regarding students.
• May perform clerical assistance in the classroom and supervise students during breaks.
