About The Position

The Education Specialist at Great Plains Zoo is tasked with the year-round implementation of educational programs at both the Great Plains Zoo and the Butterfly House & Aquarium in Sioux Falls, SD. This role requires a dynamic individual who can handle and train the ambassador animal collection while engaging with a diverse audience. The position involves programming and animal-related duties that may occur on weekdays, weekends, holidays, evenings, and even overnight. The Education Specialist will promote the organization's mission of creating connections and inspiring conservation through fun and engaging educational experiences. The specialist will present a variety of educational programs tailored to different age groups and audiences, utilizing appropriate techniques to ensure effective learning. Excellent customer service is paramount, as the specialist will interact with teachers, students, volunteers, and visitors during various programs and special events. Collaboration with the Education Director and other staff is essential for the planning and execution of programs, including camps, early childhood programs, and outreach initiatives. The role also involves developing lesson plans that align with educational standards and tracking attendance and program data. In addition to educational responsibilities, the Education Specialist will handle ambassador animals safely and professionally, assist in training volunteers and seasonal staff, and maintain accurate records of animal training. The position may also include additional duties such as supporting special events, cleaning museum artifacts, and assisting with seasonal attractions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, flexibility, and a strong commitment to teamwork, while also being comfortable in various work environments, including high-temperature and high-humidity areas.
