About The Position

The Education/Skills Coordinator, Respiratory Care collaborates with management and staff to plan, develop, and implement educational programming for employees within the Respiratory Therapy Department. The Educator acts as a key resource in the orientation and continuing education of respiratory therapy staff. The Educator is a clinical expert and is expected to maintain skills and competencies to provide all aspects of direct patient care, including Neonatal and Adult Critical Care skills. In addition, the Educator will assist with clinical policy review, protocol development, and Joint Commission readiness. The Educator applies innovative teaching strategies and methodologies to promote cost-effective, well-executed clinical education for the Respiratory Therapy Department.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree
  • Graduate of an accredited school for respiratory therapist/technician, and/or Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician or Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • 3 Previous experience in all phases of respiratory care and three (3) years in an acute care setting
  • Teaching and presentation skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Advanced multitasking, time-management, and organization skills
  • Monitoring and assessing performance of other individuals to make improvements or take corrective action

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient care services
  • Provides direct patient care
  • Develops, implements, and/or adjusts orders or protocols based on the patient's assessment response to therapy
  • Provides scheduled and emergency therapy and/or diagnostic tests to patients/clients per policy and procedures
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive patient education programs that assure quality and appropriateness of care across the settings
  • Works closely with interdisciplinary teams throughout the hospital to coordinate respiratory therapy services provided to patients
  • Contributes to the growth of hospital personnel, students, and other health care team members
  • Serves as a clinical educator, educational resource, and liaison for staff in formal and informal settings by teaching basic and advanced skills to clients including physicians, nurses, therapists and all other team members
  • Identifies staff educational needs
  • Develops, prepares, and implements educational plans to include completion of continuing education applications as necessary
  • Evaluates effectiveness and appropriateness of programs offered
  • Maintains course/class records, documents attendance, examines scores; submits databases and other records to Professional Development as required
  • Facilitates all phases of orientation and annual competencies for department
  • Provides orientation, continuing education, and in-service programs
  • Provides unit-specific orientation materials to new staff upon hire; Assists with student education
  • Establishes schedule for conferences with orientee to measure progress
  • Ensures completion of all orientation requirements prior to probationary evaluation
  • Schedules and facilitates annual competencies for department
  • Participates in department audits as directed
  • Develops and monitors respiratory protocols
  • Works with physicians and physician groups to determine best practice and pathway
  • Provides education and instruction to new and existing staff on protocol, patient assessment, policies, procedures and patient care guidelines
  • Monitors patient progress and collaborates with staff for protocol advancement
  • Monitors and develops reports and other information management tools for protocol use
  • Coordinates equipment evaluations for department
