About The Position

SMUD's Community Education and Technology Center (CE&TC) group is excited to announce an opening for a student intern. CE&TC is the hub for SMUD's external education effort, providing learning opportunities in a variety of formats for our commercial, residential, and K-12 customers. Our larger mission is to enhance the quality of life for all our customers by helping to bring environmental equity and economic vitality to all communities in our service area. We're looking for someone who is passionate about helping SMUD's K-12 customers learn about SMUD's vision for a zero carbon future. Through providing equitable opportunities for our community to take part in county wide programs, competitions, and creative partnerships, we'll inspire our  customers ages K through "Grey" to do things like act more sustainably, get involved in STEM careers, and participate in SMUD STEM programming. This internship position is in-person, onsite. About SMUD's College Internship Program SMUD's College Internship Program provides college interns with an opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to SMUD while gaining valuable work experience. Workshops and activities will also be part of the program where interns will have the opportunity to be immersed in SMUD's culture and learn leadership skills as well as develop their professional skills. SMUD was also recognized by Interns 2 Pros for the 2020 Internship Program of The Year Award in recognition of excellence in internship strategy, implementation, and impact and was one of five finalists for the 2023 Internship Program of the Year from Interns 2 Pros along with Paramount, Fox Corporation, Intuit, and Toyota.PurposeUnder staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in non-engineering subjects and disciplines.Nature and ScopeThe work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills.  This work is distinguished from students engaged in repetitive and easily learned tasks who are employed in the Office Assistant (clerical/technical) classification.  Incumbents in the Engineering Student Assistant classification perform at a similar level but are restricted to students majoring in an Engineering curriculum and performing tasks that employ acquired mathematical and science knowledge.

Requirements

  • Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at a resident academic institution in a declared curriculum that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments.
  • Reliable transportation
  • Must be able to work events during the nights and weekends (dates to be provided in advance)
  • Basic knowledge and skills of MicroSoft Suite especially with Excel
  • Interest in working in the education space and underserved communities in the Sacramento region
  • Students must be able to commute to the SMUD Offices in Sacramento, CA when requested to come in.
  • To have a student position at SMUD, you must not have any relatives working at SMUD.
  • Internship dates are as follows: Semester students (May – August) and Quarter students (June – September) of this year.
  • Students must be enrolled as a full-time student, complete and pass at least 12 undergraduate units OR 8 graduate units and receive at least a 2.0 GPA in the Spring Semester/Quarter of 2026. Students must be graduating in Summer 2026 or later.
  • If the student is graduating in Summer 2026, they must be enrolled as a part-time student in the Summer of 2026.
  • If the student is graduating in the Spring Semester/Quarter of 2026 but is pursuing another degree in the Fall Semester/Quarter of 2026, you will still be eligible. However, please make sure that it shows it clearly on your resume to show that you are eligible.
  • During the summer internship, students can work up to 130 hours per month.
  • Currently, SMUD is not hiring candidates for its student internship positions who require sponsorship from an employer either now or in the future. Such sponsorship is not needed for citizens, a U.S. National, a permanent resident, or one granted refuge or asylum status by the U.S. government.

  • Majoring in: Marketing, Communications, or Recreation Parks and Tourism Administration
  • Prior experience in event/program planning

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in preparing our Education Specialists for their classroom visits by preparing kits, materials, etc.
  • Assist in events (planning and the day of) for a variety of events such as Solar Car Races, Electricity Fair, Summer STEM Fest, Solar Regatta, Emerging Leaders Energy Summit, and more.
  • Manage tabling opportunities in the community by doing STEM activities with youth such as solar bracelet activities, snap circuits activities and more.
  • Assist in STEM activities done in the classroom and in our community such as Solar Car Races.
  • Manage STEM Education spreadsheet to keep track of which education and community partners we're conducting STEM activities.
  • Conduct other administrative tasks such as managing renting out batteries, internal administrative work to track STEM activities, and more!
