The job of Education Assistant - Special Education is done for the purpose of improving special education students' success in the basic academics; relieving teachers of clerical tasks; and assisting students with special health care needs. Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the teacher; administers tests; assists special education students requiring daily care, (e.g. toileting, feeding, diapering, catheterizing, hygiene, etc.); confers with teachers and/or parents as may be required; implements instructional programs and lesson plans; instructs students (individual or small groups) (e.g. reading, math, spelling, self esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, etc.); maintains classroom equipment, work area, student files/records, (e.g. clean up after various class projects, entering grades, adapting instructional materials, audiovisual equipment, etc.); monitors and assists special education students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments, (e.g. classrooms, rest rooms, hallways, cafeteria, labs, field trips, etc.); participates in in-service workshops and training; performs record keeping and clerical functions, (e.g. scheduling, copying, instructional materials, correcting papers, compiling lists, etc.); picks up and/or delivers homework/assignments to students at home; responds to emergency situations; assists other personnel as may be required.
