About The Position

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking an Education and Outreach Volunteer Coordinator to work out of the Inouye Regional Center (IRC). The Inouye Regional Center (IRC) Education and Outreach Volunteer Coordinator supports the scope of a federal cooperative agreement award between the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, with a focus on public engagement at the Inouye Regional Center. The position is embedded with Inouye Regional Center, and is based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The IRC Education and Outreach Volunteer Coordinator works collaboratively as part of a team led by the IRC Education and Outreach Specialist to develop and coordinate programs for the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation in support of the Inouye Regional Center in Honolulu, HI. The Coordinator, in coordination with the IRC Education and Outreach Specialist, works with government, community, and corporate partners to plan, coordinate, and facilitate volunteer and intern activities, and supports volunteer management for IRC on-site tour programs and off-site outreach events.  The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is committed to a culture of inclusion, equity, and belonging. Requirements

  • Operational Excellence: Proven ability to prioritize competing tasks and meet strict deadlines with high attention to detail.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication skills; proficiency in social media management.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Team Dynamics: A collaborative self-starter who works effectively both independently and within cross-functional teams to ensure overall mission success.
  • Judgment & Initiative: Ability to use sound judgment to solve problems and make proactive recommendations.

Nice To Haves

  • Education: Bachelor s degree in Education, Hawaiian Studies, Science, Communications, or a related field.
  • Experience: Background in program coordination, volunteer management, or event planning.
  • Sector Knowledge: Familiarity with government and non-profit organizational structures.
  • Physical & Logistics: Valid driver s license; ability to work outdoors/weekends and lift up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Full-Cycle Recruitment: Manage the full volunteer lifecycle, including recruitment, vetting, and the completion of all required onboarding documentation.
  • Professional Development: Assist with design and delivery of volunteer training curricula; facilitate ongoing learning opportunities for all active volunteers.
  • Supervision: Oversee volunteer performance and provide on-site support during outreach events and programming.
  • Data Integrity: Maintain accurate, comprehensive databases for all volunteers, interns, and participating educators.
  • Educational Liaison: Coordinate logistics for school tours and group visits, serving as the primary point of contact for teachers and community partners.
  • Communication & Content: Author and manage the monthly education and outreach newsletter; maintain the IRC website with current resources and event schedules.
  • Strategic Support: Partner with the Program Specialist to plan and execute volunteer meetings and regional summer intern activities.
  • Event Execution: Assist in the planning and onsite coordination of IRC events.
