Riverhead Books, an imprint at Penguin Random House, is seeking an Editorial Assistant to provide essential administrative and editorial support to two editors: one Editor in Chief and one Executive Editor. This role is pivotal in managing projects across both narrative non-fiction and literary fiction, ensuring that all aspects of the publishing process are executed smoothly and efficiently. The ideal candidate will be an organized, detail-oriented, and meticulous self-starter with exceptional writing and communication skills, capable of providing comprehensive project support throughout all stages of publication. In this fully in-office position based in midtown NYC, the Editorial Assistant will help shepherd projects and authors through the publication process, starting from acquisition and continuing through to the finished book. This includes tasks such as preparing critical documents like CIS, P&L, and routing copyedits, as well as gathering author questionnaires and photos. The assistant will also anticipate deadlines and assist in drafting supporting materials for titles, including TI sheets, galley copy, flap copy, reading group guides, and audio scripts, ensuring that all necessary materials are available in a timely manner for both in-house and consumer-facing uses. Additionally, the Editorial Assistant will handle various administrative tasks such as mailings and expense reports, while working closely with other departments including marketing, publicity, rights, and sales to provide needed materials and assistance. Regular monitoring and updating of key information and metadata will be required, with a critical eye on necessary changes throughout the life of the book. The role also involves tracking and evaluating submissions, writing reader's reports and rejection letters, researching competitive titles, and creating basic P&Ls on prospective titles. The assistant will read projects under contract and provide editorial feedback to the editors upon request.
