About The Position

Performs Patient Care Activities as delegated by the Nurse and/or Physician for patients of all age's groups with both acute and chronic health problems. The Non-Licensed Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care that encompasses the nursing assistant role, phlebotomy, and 12-lead ECG tracings.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Work experience in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the RN provides indirect care that supports the Emergency Department mission.
  • Participates in cost containment and development/maintenance of a positive work environment.
  • Minimizes overtime and attends required classes and meetings.
  • Participates in unit committees and adheres to all policies and procedures.
  • Promotes patient safety by applying protective devices correctly and anticipating patient requests.
  • Makes rounds every hour as a minimum and assists RN in planning patient care.
  • Maintains a safe unit environment and promotes infection control by washing hands before and after patient contact.
  • Handles soiled linen, equipment, and instruments per protocol and maintains sterile asepsis.
  • Changes and secures dressings and maintains isolation technique.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately and keeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment.
  • Maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses’ station, utility rooms) clean and stocked.
  • Restocks equipment in patient rooms and is accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers, and other pertinent equipment.
  • Completes appropriate work forms for maintenance and clinical engineering service.
  • Performs pulse oximetry, Foley catheter insertion, and selected diagnostic tests.
  • Provides care for patients requiring restraint or seclusion and performs bedside lab testing.
  • Observes and measures patient information per policy including temperatures, pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, and pain ratings.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of all equipment necessary to perform job functions.
  • Performs and documents special procedures per policy including application of heat/cold and decubitus care.
  • Maintains and cleans suction equipment and prepares rooms for trauma and surgical procedures.
  • Promotes patient wellness by maintaining a pleasant environment and assisting with mobility and nutrition management.
  • Provides assistance with elimination procedures and communicates any intake and output.
