About The Position

The RN Supervisor provides leadership and coordination of daily clinical operations within assigned patient-care areas. Reporting to the department Director, the RN Supervisor ensures the delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centered nursing care consistent with the hospital’s mission, vision, and core values. The position fosters collaboration among interdisciplinary teams, supports continuous quality improvement, and promotes professional growth and engagement among nursing staff. The RN Supervisor may provide direct patient care as needed to maintain standards of practice and ensure continuity of care.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree desirable.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in an acute-care setting. Minimum of three (3) years of Emergency Department experience. Minimum of two (2) Prior leadership, charge, or supervisory experience required. Demonstrated ability to manage teams, prioritize workflow, and coordinate multidisciplinary care.
  • Licensure/Certification: Current Vermont (or compact) Registered Nurse license. Current BLS certification; ACLS and PALS required or obtained within 3 months
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in critical thinking, decision-making, and conflict resolution.

  • Ability to mentor staff, drive quality initiatives, and adapt to changing clinical demands.
  • Requires a higher-than-average ability to multitask, take orally presented information and to handle it in an appropriate way with a higher-than-average level of accuracy. Ability to work with patients, families and public experiencing stressful situations.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous material, body fluids, bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases. Potential for injury due to physical demands.
  • OSHA Category I - Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues require use of techniques of Universal Precautions as evidenced with blood borne pathogens standards.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership and Operations: Direct and coordinate day-to-day clinical operations to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care. Establish and communicate priorities for the nursing team, adjusting assignments as needed based on patient acuity and staffing levels. Ensure compliance with hospital policies, CMS Conditions of Participation, and other regulatory requirements. Monitor and evaluate patient outcomes, documentation standards, and adherence to care plans. Participate in incident review and corrective-action planning to enhance patient safety.
  • Staff Supervision and Development: Provide ongoing supervision, coaching, and performance feedback for assigned staff. Participate in recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts for nursing personnel. Oversee competency validation, continuing education, and annual performance reviews. Foster a culture of teamwork, respect, and accountability through effective communication and recognition of achievement.
  • Quality and Performance Improvement: Utilize data and feedback to identify opportunities for quality improvement and operational efficiency. Lead or participate in departmental and hospital-wide quality initiatives. Encourage evidence-based practice, patient-safety initiatives, and interdepartmental collaboration to improve outcomes.
  • Resource and Fiscal Management: Assist in monitoring staffing levels, labor hours, and supply utilization in alignment with budgetary goals. Support efficient resource allocation and cost-effective delivery of care. Ensuring adequate equipment and supplies are available when needed. Participate in planning and implementing departmental goals that align with organizational strategy.
  • Education and Professional Practice: Serve as a clinical resource and role model for evidence-based nursing practice. Facilitate staff education, policy review, and skill validation. Support interdisciplinary education and patient-family teaching to promote optimal health outcomes.
  • Policy and Procedure Implementation: Assist in reviewing, revising and implementing departmental policies, procedures and protocols to ensure all staff are informed of and adhere to changes
  • Problem Solving and Crisis Management Acts as a key decision maker in high stress, time sensitive situations, responding to emergencies and managing incidents and accidents effectively.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Serves as a primary contact and liaison between nursing staff, physician and other department personnel and hospital administration.
  • Patient Care: May provide direct patient care as needed and act as an escalation point for complex patient issues and complaints.
