Job Summary: Our Nursing team member’s primary goal is to provide the most remarkable patient experience while providing professional nursing services and patient care in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the sexual assault victim. This may include a medical forensic exam, pregnancy testing as indicated, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection prophylaxis as indicated, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support, and participation in legal proceedings. The SANE nurse collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary teams to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families while adhering to hospital and departmental polices and nursing standards and practice.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of North Carolina
  • Certificate of Completion from a NCBON approved SANE program.
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.). All new employees working must be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment (unless the new hire has requested and received an exemption). Candidates for employment will be notified of this policy requirement prior to the start of employment. After receiving an offer of employment, new employees must provide proof of vaccination or request and receive an exemption before beginning work.

  • One year of SANE experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, professional nursing care to patients.
  • Perform a complete medical forensic examination for physical abuse/assault, neglect, sexual assault, and SAFE patients including the history, head-to-toe assessment, anogenital assessment, evidence/ specimen collection, and photographs. Identify, collect, preserve, package, and secure evidence correctly. Maintain a proper chain of custody of all evidence.
  • Provide emotional support during the examination.
  • Complete all documentation including photographs accurately, and concisely.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality both verbally and in written records and photographs.
  • Provide discharge instructions with follow-up contact information. Coordinate care and referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up.
  • Respond to subpoenas and provide testimony in court or before a grand jury.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies.
  • Ensures safe operation of equipment.
  • Administers medications by using the electronic health record and scanning process.
  • Documents, monitors and reports of symptoms and changes in patient status.
  • Provides patient education of illness/disease and promotes health maintenance and disease prevention.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families and other team members.
  • Performs a head-to-toe assessment and reassessments on all age groups.
  • Will interact professionally with patient/family and provide explanation and verbal reassurance.
  • Formulates and updates an individualized plan of care for each patient.
  • Assumes the role of patient advocate.
  • Complies with protocols, procedures, and policies.
  • Prioritizes nursing care and uses critical thinking skills
  • Documents all nursing care data concisely, accurately and completely in a timely manner, using the appropriate format.
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with all hospital staff, visitors, families and physicians.
  • Ability to be flexible organized and function under stressful and emergency situations.
  • Always exhibits professionalism, showing respect and dignity to all.
  • Other duties as assigned.
