About The Position

The ED Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) position involves utilizing clinical social work techniques and theory to consult on, assess, and intervene with high-risk patients and their families regarding emotional and social problems. The role includes conducting psychosocial assessments, making psychosocial diagnoses, planning and implementing effective treatments, and providing education, supervision, coaching, and mentoring to patients and their families. The position requires collaboration with a wide range of social, governmental, and legal agencies, as well as healthcare professionals in the overall care of the patient.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited school of Social Work with experience in trauma-informed care.
  • Massachusetts Licensed Certified Social Worker.
  • Previous experience with children and families, child protection, and child welfare.
  • Crisis experience required.
  • Experience with vulnerable populations preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital or healthcare setting strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Social Work process and community resources related to health, illness, and disability.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patient and family to ascertain emotional and social problems using the department's psychosocial assessment tool.
  • Identifies issues to be addressed during patient care and formulates a plan.
  • Completes biopsychosocial assessments and specialized trauma assessments.
  • Provides trauma-informed, strengths-based interventions for patients and families.
  • Communicates effectively with providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the Emergency Department.
  • Initiates and manages meetings with families dealing with catastrophic news.
  • Supports patients and families in crisis and initiates family meetings with ED providers.
  • Interacts independently with healthcare professionals on behalf of patients and families.
  • Responds to P1 and P2 traumas promptly and assists in identifying patients and next of kin.
  • Provides case management and advocacy for patients and families.
  • Collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams and community providers.
  • Assesses safety risks and provides brief, solution-focused interventions.
  • Uses techniques like motivational interviewing and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral treatment.
  • Provides crisis intervention and problem-solving support.
  • Offers information, referrals, and counseling on various health and social issues.
  • Collaborates with other BMC programs and community agencies.
  • Responds promptly to consult requests and referrals for social work support.
  • Triage cases and prioritize patients with time-sensitive needs.
  • Communicates with ED colleagues and Social Work Manager on call.
  • Provides education and emotional support to patients, families, and ED staff.
  • Develops and maintains effective therapeutic relationships.
  • Screens and assesses patients for social determinants of health.
  • Reports suspected cases of abuse and neglect and follows up.
  • Consults with healthcare team members to address emotional and social needs.
  • Provides psychotherapeutic treatment and psychosocial support.
  • Ensures patients and families are involved and supported throughout care.
  • Begins assessments for inpatient and outpatient referrals within specified time frames.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and practices professional discretion.
  • Documents patient encounters in medical records according to policies.
  • Works independently and initiates interventions.
  • Provides clinical supervision to department personnel and interns.
  • Complies with documentation and data collection requirements.
  • Submits department statistics and records on time.
  • Maintains competency in areas of responsibility.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service education programs.
  • Obtains continuing education units for licensure.
  • Participates in department programs and complies with policies.
  • Supports training programs by supervising students.
  • Identifies operational weaknesses and recommends improvements.
  • Represents the department in the hospital and community.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area and reports equipment malfunctions.
  • Understands emergency procedures and conforms to hospital standards.
