About The Position

Economic Opportunity Coach Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Salary: $25.00 (hourly) Non-Exempt Benefits and Perks: Supportive, fun and friendly team environment! Clients/Families we serve reside in the South Los Angeles, Compton, Watts and Lynwood area. SHIELDS’ mission is to develop, deliver and evaluate culturally sensitive, comprehensive service models that empower and advocate for high-risk families in South Los Angeles. We are seeking a dedicated Economic Opportunity Coach to provide economic development, workforce development, and career advancement services to homeless or at-risk families in South Los Angeles, promoting housing stabilization and family resiliency. This role involves assessing incoming referrals for program eligibility, conducting intake and comprehensive assessments, and developing individualized employment plans tailored to each participant’s needs. Responsibilities include linking clients to job training, education, vocational programs, small business and entrepreneurship opportunities, and employment placement services. The position also requires organizing workshops, career fairs, and economic stability support groups, collaborating with housing stability coaches, and assisting participants in obtaining basic needs and developing independent living skills. The ideal candidate will maintain regular client contact, monitor program outcomes, ensure timely completion of referrals, and coordinate services with partners while supporting clients’ long-term economic and housing stability goals in accordance with the Helping Families Thrive Program. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Proficient in reading and writing in English
  • Experience working with clients with histories of substance abuse, incarceration, mental illness, or homelessness
  • Familiar with eligibility screening for entitlement programs such as DPSS, Vocational Rehab, and CalWORKs
  • Strong understanding of compatible service systems (e.g., DPSS, SSI)
  • Compliance with agency policies, procedures, and HIPAA
  • Comfortable working with diverse populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals, formerly incarcerated clients, and those with co-occurring disorders
  • Able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Proficiency with computers and word processing software
