About The Position

Provide technical expertise in beaver and wetland mapping and conservation, write and review sections of the Colorado Beaver Management and Conservation Strategy, and lead development of an accompanying decision support system for statewide beaver restoration. Train staff to develop model training data for and review results of beaver pond models for the Colorado River basin. Analyze output and trends from the beaver modeling data, and synthesize implications for conservation and restoration.

Requirements

  • M.S. degree in botany, ecology, natural resources, range management, forestry, engineering or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of wetland hydrology and ecology specific to the Rocky Mountain region and the western U.S.
  • Fifteen years of experience working in wetlands and/or riparian areas, specifically collecting data on vegetation, soils, water, and/or other environmental data and experience with various mapping and monitoring techniques.
  • Expertise in identifying and prioritizing wetland restoration and conservation areas across Colorado and the West, along with regionally appropriate and emerging wetland restoration techniques.
  • Experience with remote sensing analysis of geospatial data in ESRI’s ArcGIS software suite.
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing aerial photography, topographic data, LiDAR, and ancillary geospatial data.
  • Experience developing tools and protocols to assess the ecological condition and restoration needs of wetlands in Colorado and the West.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software (PC-ORD, R, SPSS, SAS, etc.).
  • Willingness to initiate contacts with stakeholders, including local, state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic partners, private landowners, and others.
  • Proven success with past collaborative initiatives.
  • Willingness and ability to work with a positive attitude in field conditions that include exposure to inclement weather, rugged terrain, hot or cold weather, mosquitos, and poisonous plants, all while maintaining a strong commitment to team safety.
  • Careful attention to detail, strong oral communication skills, and strong written and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in ecology, engineering, botany, natural resources, range management, forestry, or related field preferred.
